Original o primera edición
First edition. Lush modern full tan morocco with raised bands. Excellent condition, edges untrimmed. 500, [4] pp., 17 uncolored plates, 9 hand-colored costume plates, folding map, 4 leaves of music inserted between pages 68 and 69. Half-title. Engraved title, but no letterpress title page. The plates include a long folding frontispiece view of the University of Coimbra. The uncolored plates have been printed on thinner paper and mounted. A scarce work. Abbey (Travel) 142 describes the somewhat confused collation. Abbey, and Tooley 289, describe a 40-page "Second Supplementary Letter" dated 1829 as being included in copies of the first edition. That letter has not been included here, suggesting that this copy was among the earlier issues of the first edition which did not include it. Tooley's collation corresponds with this copy in that it does not include the letterpress title page described in Abbey. However, this copy includes the half-title which is listed in Abbey, but not Tooley. Colas 1612, Lipperheide 1218.
