First edition thus, deluxe issue, one of 350 unnumbered copies printed on handmade paper. Rubáiyáts with illustrations by Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) were published from 1906 onwards, of which this edition is the most comprehensive and elaborate, with seven illustrations by Brangwyn reproduced for the first time. The text of this edition, Fitzgerald's translation, first published in 1859, slowly gained recognition as a masterpiece of English literature. By the early 1900s, many of Fitzgerald's phrases had entered the common stock of English quotations and allusions; a growing "cult of the Rubáiyát" found expression in "the Omar Khayyám Clubs of England and America" (Yohannan, p. 202). Potter 113; John D. Yohannan, Persian Poetry in England and America, 1977. Quarto. Original vellum, spine lettered and blocked with grapes motif in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With 15 colour plates, including frontispiece, all reproduced from oil paintings by Brangwyn, mounted on tan paper and with tissue guards. Title page printed in gold, one quatrain printed per page, each with grape vine border in gold designed by Brangwyn. Covers very gently bowed and lightly soiled, spine slightly darkened, contents clean. A very good copy.
