Mention of the Kentish town of Dartford was first made in the Domesday Book of AD1085 which noted the construction of a Church there. At the time of publication of this book, in the mid-1930s, the church tower bulit then still stood. The author notes in his preface that an "admirable" 1844 history of Dartford by John Dunkin was "not trespassed", but added to, in the 1933 volume, It, in turn, includes items from a 50 year collecttioin of notes, recollections and anecdotes of local historian Ernest Youens, who offered these when learning of author's history project. A remarkable history emerged with this combined content based on more thanr 120 items including basic topics such as churches, prominant personalities, notable buildings, industry and agriculture, interspersed with more unusual issues like floods, Kent's prettiest trour steam. railway development, a Royalist uprising, cricket, schools/hospitals, stocks and pillory, 1919 Peace celebrations --- covering Dartford history from AD1085 to the 1930s with snippets aplenty providing an amazing variety in this wide sweep of Dartford over the centuries.
