[heavy book that may require extra shipping costs for some overseas destinations] an important, but somewhat neglected work, written in honour of Captain Samuel Sturmy, author of "The Mariner's Magazine" of 1669. comprises, a chapter on the 17th-century background, notes on the life of Captain Sturmy, a general description of his book, and a chapter on his library. with signed presentation inscription from the author 20.03.

Boards are heavily rubbed and chipped at edges, rounded on spine ends, stain around upper leading corners, with numerous small, mild marks and indentations. Endpapers a little toned, unevenly. Some pencil annotations on front free endpaper, else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. Signed and inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, 'For my friends Mr and Mrs Allison, with best wishes for Christmas and the New Year, Cyril Kenney, Dec 1948'. Written in honour of Captain Samuel Sturmy, 'a tryed and trusty sea-man', and author of The Mariner's Magazine, 1669. A biographical account of Sturmy's life, together with a description and history of the magazine he produced and the collection of books he accumulated. Inscribed by Author(s).

It is copiously illustrated in monochrome. The spine is olive green cloth (no lettering), and the boards are covered in white paper with black lettering on the front. CONDITION. VG+. A clean tight copy, with slight darkening round the edges of the covers. It has retained its original flimsy plain white paper wrap, now rubbed and creased, and with a repair at the top of the spine. No marks of ownership. Weight before packing 1 kg.

Profusely illustrated with facsimiles of title pages, portraits and instruments. The text consists of five 'books': The Seventeenth Century Background; Notes on the Life of Captain Samuel Sturmy; General Description of his Book, 'The Mariner's Magazine - 1669'; The Library of Captain Sturmy; and Conclusion. The five books are separated by title pages illustrated with woodcuts by Hellmuth Weissenborn. Sturmy died in 1669 in the year after he published this - his only - book, which, based on his contributions to 'The Mariner's Magazineâ , were of upmost importance to the accuracy of maritime navigation.
