Condición: Very Good+. London-published "The Royal Scrapbook," with 16 steel-engraved plates of scenes in Britain. Blue cloth, ornate gilt-stamping on upper board and spine; 9.5-by-12 inches; approx. pp. 150, with afore-mentioned plates, 90 tipped-on missives, the "Directory of Official Guests of the Hudson-Fulton Celebration Commission," and a passenger list. Boards rubbed, a little frayed along the edges. The Albany Burgesses Corps, the oldest military-style organization in New York State (1833), decided to host a Grand Ball at the Metropolitan Opera House, in conjunction with the Hudson-Fulton Ter-Centenary Celebration in New York. To that end, Captain Seymour M. Kemp sent invitations to every foreign consulate, numerous military organizations, and just about every naval ship in the fleet that was present for the celebration. Ninety responses (acceptances and regrets) to his invitations are preserved here -- mostly handwritten, some typed, on the letterhead or stationery of the invitee -- offering a wealth of paper, type, and handwriting specimens, plus a few envelopes with stamps and postmarks. Responders include captains for the USS Ohio, Culgoa, New Hampshire, Georgia, Virginia, Vermont; officers from the British ships HMS Drake, Duke of Edinburgh, Argylle; the General Consuls of Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Spain; officers of the Imperial Russian Consulate General; the Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Consul; and many more. Also includes an engraved (and unused) ticket made out to the Polar explorer Dr. Frederick A. Cook; a copy of the "Directory of Official Guests of the Hudson-Fulton Celebration Commission" (pp. 23, wraps); and a cabin passenger list for the French mail steamer La Normandie, sailing from New York to Havre in August 1889. Although this popular Ball was held "in celebration" of the Hudson-Fulton event, it did not enjoy official sponsorship of the Official Celebration Committee, who "disclaimed" the renegade ball.
