William Jay (17891858), American jurist and reformer, was the son of John Jay (1745-1829), American patriot, statesman, and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. For most of the period from 1818 to 1843 he served as Judge of the county court of Westchester, N.Y. An active abolitionist, Jay helped establish (1833) the New York City Anti-Slavery Society and wrote vigorous pamphlets and articles on the topic. Jay, judge and moral reformer, was a vigorous advocate of emancipation. He was instrumental in establishing the New York City Anti-Slavery Society and It was largely through his persuasive arguments that a National Anti-Slavery Convention in Philadelphia "inaugurated a country-wide campaign that was based on strictly consitutional grounds." (DAB) He also opposed plans to establish former slave colonies in Africa. The work includes discussion of emancipation in the West Indies. Sabin 35857.
