Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fair. 184 pages. Dj chipped and wornFor more than sixty years John Piper has painted, drawn, photographed and recorde his impression s of the landscapes and buildings of the British Isles. HIs inter est in the natural order has ranged from the gentle, adapted land scape of Romney Marsh to the rocky wilderness of Snowdonia. His p assion for buildings extends from the palladian country house to the cottage built in the vernacular, from an ornate Somerset chur ch tower to the dusty clutter of a vestry. This association with topographical subjects has been sustained by many years work on t he Shell Guides to the English and Welsh counties. The Guides, of which he was co-editor with John Betjeman and subsequently sole editor, financed, as Anthony West has put it, 'an exploration and penetration of the English and Welsh scene of an intensity and r ange which few artists have been able to undertake'. This book pr esents for the first time in one volume the range of John Piper's topographical work in the British Isles. Richard Ingrams, who ha s walked over and written about much of the country recorded by P iper himself, tells the story, with engaging and very appropriate informality, of the latter's life with the landscape, natural an d created, of Britain; the influences on this aspect of his work; and the people who have joined him in it, including John Betjema n, J. M. Richards and Geoffrey Grigson. The text is enhanced by P iper's own reflections, some occasioned by the book itself others drawn from working notebooks, diaries and articles. The illustra tions reproduce aquatints, drawings, collages, oil paintings and watercolours. Some of these paintings have been specially painted for the book, and many more are reproduced here for the first ti me. Piper's Places invites those who read it and look at its illu strations to observe afresh the British landscape through the eye s of the person who has done more to celebrate it than any artist since Turner.

A remarkably perceptive and vivid life of William Cobbett, one of England's greatest radicals. The early years of the nineteenth century were ones of misery and oppression. The common people were thrown into conditions of extreme poverty by enclosures and the Agricultural Revolution, and the long Tory administration of Lord Liverpool saw its task as keeping law and order at all costs. The cause of reform was a dangerous one, as William Cobbett was to find. Cobbett is best known for his Rural Rides, that classic account of early-nineteenth century Britain which has never been out of print. But he was a much greater figure than that implies, being the foremost satirist and proponent of reform of the time. He had an invincible stomach for provoking the deceit and vanity of the supposedly good and great, and had an abiding hatred of the establishment, or 'The Thing', as he christened it. In the pages of his Political Register he lambasted corruption and excoriated hypocrisy, and walked forever in fear of prosecution for libel, for which he was sent to Newgate prison for two years, suffered bankruptcy and was forced to flee to America. For all that the establishment loathed and feared him, the people loved him, and he was greeted by adoring crowds wherever he went. He was a hero of his time, and Richard Ingrams's admirable biography is both judicious, moving, sometimes funny and always utterly engaging. Ref DDD 5.
