The 21 Club, often simply 21, or Jack & Charlie's as it was also known, was an American traditional cuisine restaurant and former prohibition-era speakeasy, located at 21 West 52nd Street in New York City where the rich and famous gathered to eat and drink. After being shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic, the club announced in December 2020 that it would not reopen "in its current form for the foreseeable future" and is exploring potential opportunities that will allow 21 Club to remain a viable operation in the long term. This volume was put together to honor John Carl Kriendler, the founder of 21 and to raise money for the New York Heart Association. There are short sketches by many of the luminaries of the day describing their experiences with 21. (see the Keyword field for a list of their names) The first edition of The Iron Gate was published in 1936.
