Dampstain to margins of endpapers and title page; soiling to title page; prior owner inscription first blank endpaper; 1/2" scrape/tear outer margin p.xiii.

He Was Born In Deerfield, Massachusetts And Graduated From New York University In 1842 And From The General Theological Seminary In 1845. In 1848 He Organized, And Until His Death Was Rector Of, The Church Of The Transfiguration, Better Known As The "Little Church Around The Corner", In New York City. Houghton Was Distinguished For His Activity In Benevolent Work. At His Death He Was Succeeded By His Nephew, George Clarke Houghton, A Distinguished Episcopal Clergyman Of Notable Community Involvement, New Jersey State Superintendent Of Instruction 1885-1897, Etc. Also, Bookplates George Clarke Houghton Almost Entirely Covering The Front Pastedowns Of Both Volumes; And Later Bookplates/Loan Warnings Of W. E. Howard, Salt Lake City, A Prominent Book Collector.

Hunt's introduction to the sonnet runs to over 90pp. to which Lee adds an appraisal of the American practitioners of the form. The anthology confines itself to sonnets composed in English. Amongst many others there are contributions from Wyatt, Sidney, Raleigh, Spenser, Shakespeare, Jonson, Milton, Gray, Bowles, Coleridge, Lamb, Wordsworth, Southey, Shelley, Byron, Hunt himself, the Tennysons, Elizabeth Barret Browning, Allingham & Longfellow. All edges marbled. Spine recently rebacked in panelled calf with raised bands ruled in blind. Maroon & black morocco title labels lettered in gilt. Whilst published simultaneously in London & Boston shortly after Hunt's death this UK edition which contains an undertaking to pass royalties to his family appears less common. Extra Postage will be required - SHIPPED AT COST. Book.
