in-12, 143 pp., basane mouchetée, dos à nerfs, reliure d époque Barbier (248), dans sa première édition attribue cet ouvrage à François-Charles Huerne de la Mothe puis dans les éditions postérieures à Vernon, médecin. Quérard a successivement reproduit les deux attributions. Soleinne (V-52), l attribue à Huerne de la Mothe, en ajoutant ce commentaire : Cet ouvrage reparut sous un autre titre Lettres sur les Spectacles à Mlle De. concluant que l auteur, ayant changé son opinion vis à vis de Melle Clairon, lui aurait retiré sa dédicace. Ouvrage d une grande rareté, imprimé en France, mais vraisemblablement pas à Paris, d'après le matériel typographique utilisé.Bon état.
Relié. In-8 (13 x 20,2 cm), reliure plein veau, dos lisse orné de dorures et d'une pièce de titre, liseré d'encadrement sur les plats, tranches rouges, deux parties réunies en un volume, 192 et 143 pages, ouvrage sans mention d'auteur [Huerne de la Mothe] ni d'éditeur ; quelques épidermures sur le cuir notamment aux aux mors et coupes, mors fendus aux coiffes, petite tache au premier plat, par ailleurs assez bon état général. Titres dans un encadrement typographique, 192 pp.; 143 pp. Quelques rousseurs. Seconde édition sous un nouveau titre. Ce roman galant dont Gay affirme qu'il est "digne de prendre rang, avec Manon Lescaut, à la tête des romans français" avait paru pour la première fois en 1763 sous le titre trompeur L'Enfantement de Jupiter ou la fille sans mère. Il raconte l'histoire de Margot, jeune fille très fringante, et de ses amants. Elle commence dans le vice et se termine dans la vertu. La mère de Margot exerçait la profession de ravaudeuse. On ne peut s'empêcher d'y voir une allusion et certainement une influence littéraire du fameux roman Margot la Ravaudeuse, publié par Fougeret de Montbron en 1750. Edition originale. Comédienne la plus célébrée de son temps, Mademoiselle Clairon, nom de scène de Claire Josèphe Hippolyte Léris (1723-1803) milita avec acharnement contre la rigueur de l Église française envers les gens de théâtre, contre l excommunication qui les frappaient et revendiqua un statut civil et religieux à leur endroit. En soutien à son action, la comédienne sollicita, pour cet ouvrage, l aide d un avocat au parlement de Paris, Huerne de La Mothe. Les auteurs dénoncent les abus de droit opérés par l Église en matière d excommunication depuis les origines, particulièrement envers les gens de théâtre. Ils prennent soin de faire la différence entre les farces passées et l excellence de la tragédie de leur temps, édifiant pour "le goût des moeurs"; les actrices et acteurs sont des représentants de la grande culture, défenseurs de la poésie et de la littérature, soutenus par le roi comme par les plus hautes autorités. Par arrêt du 22 avril 1761, ce mémoire a été interdit, brûlé par la main du bourreau et l auteur rayé du tableau des avocats. Mors fendu. Coiffes usées, reliure un peu épidermée.
