Hardcover. Condición: VG+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: G+. Photos, Art, Maps Ilustrador. 1st. Tasman Bay, at the north west of South Island is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled areas in NZ. While concentrating on the Tasman Bay area the book also examines the coast extending north from the Motueka River, just north of Nelson. This area is known as the Enchanted Coast, which author was familiar with, having previously written a number of travel handbooks on the "Coast" and also the neaby Tasman National Parkl and rhe Nelson Lakes. Tasman Bay recalls the Dutch navigator who discovered NZ (1642), but James Cook (1770) and and the French navigator/explorer Dumont d'Urville (1827) were also. early visitors to the area, the latter leaving his mark with a number of French place names. The author has noted these activities, then the early settlers and their initial contacts with the native Maori people, sealing and whaling, before moving on to the varied activities of the new settlers who inhabited an area that was largely isolated and remote until comparatively recent times. These aspects of life on the "Coast" are traversed, as are personalities from different eras with recollections and anecdotes. A well told story. First edition from John McIndoe in 1976, 148 pages including bibliography, 27 b/w illustrations, mainly photos with some art and including several portraits, e/paper maps of general area, full page map of the "Coast" with insert enlargement. Brown hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+. small ink name top corner title page, text block otherwise excellent, Colour art DJ is G+ with short tear top edge adjacent spine, small hole at lower spine, few chips with isolated surface wear.
