The daughter of a Sheffield saw manufacturer Barbara Wreakes was married to Thomas Bradshaw Hoole a succesful merchant.On his early death and with the support of James Montgomery, she published a volume of poems which attracted over 2000 subscribers* enabling her to open a boarding-school at Harrogate. With her second husband, the Sheffield painter Thomas Hofland, [ "Sheffield from Crooksmoor" and " Sheffield from Meersbook" both issued as prints in 1826] she settled in London and began publishing novels.It was in Harrogate that she wrote The Clergyman's Widow [1812 ] which was a great success selling 17,000 copies. An interesting copy with Holbeck connections in a sound contemporary quarter leather binding. Engraved Frontispiece and titlepage 16mo. 176pps inscribed by Richard and Susannah Tuer of Holbeck 1841 with typographical bookplate. NB * A copy of the First Edition of Barbara Hoole's Poems is also available.

A satirical poem inspired by Christopher Ansteys The New Bath Guide [1766] Hoflands version sees Blunderhead's nephew visit "The Bath of the North" and describes amongst other things the towns beauties,a visit from the quack Samuel Solomon and pronouncements on Southey and Byron among the wits at Wilson's Library. The daughter of a Sheffield saw manufacturer Barbara Wreakes was married to Thomas Bradshaw Hoole a merchant who died suddenly in1798 leaving her with two children and no means of support. In 1805 with the help of James Montgomery, she published a volume of poems which attracted over 2000 subscribers enabling her to open a boarding school in Harrogate. With her second husband, the Sheffield painter Thomas C. Hofland she settled in London and published over sixty didactic moral stories and schoolbooks. A very nice copy of the First Edition in restored original boards.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. Limited Edition. 43 page full alphabetical subscribers list, with copper engraved vignette title page and dedicatory page to the Countess Fitzwilliam. With 256 pages + 4 pages of contents, printed on hand-made paper still uncut and with some pages of uneven length, but all complete, pages 251-254 are loose from string stitching, but not damaged and also these look trimmed but as issued and not cut at any time. Pages 11-15 also issued on paper of a shorter length, so printing anomalies. Some small age spots of foxing or browning on several sections, most pages are clear. Amateur old calf spine and original sugar paper blue boards, worn, corners bumped. Size appears as a small octavo, but bound and paginated as a quarto. Printed in Sheffield by the excellent printer J Montgomery (The Sheffield Poet and publisher of the Iris Magazine. 1805. Only edition printed. SCARCE: *This was Barbara Hoole's (nee. Wreaks & later Hofland she married the artist Thomas Christopher Hofland in 1810 and then used the name Hofland after that date). Sheffield born in 1770, this was her1st work. She managed to acquire 2000 subscribers and it was a great success (all listed here) and opened a school in Harrogate with the proceeds. She wrote around 70 books in total mainly children's and also travel books for children. A friend of John Soane the architect, he asked her to write a descriptive work on his museum in Lincoln's Inn. A scarce and rare work. 3 copies located on Copac; Exeter, National Library of Scotland & The BL None located in the USA or elsewhere.
