Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Limited Edition. No. 23 of 30 copies, square large octavo size, [50 pp.] plus inserted drawings, signed by Barbara Hodgson and Claudia Cohen at the colophon, in a drop-back box. "HM Editions", i.e., "Heavenly Monkey", includes the tag line on their web site of "Publisher of elusive books". Truer words were never spoken, for the exceptionally high quality of the Heavenly Monkey publications, in every aspect, has gained for Rollin Milroy an enthusiastic and devoted following, with his books extremely difficult to obtain if one is not fortunate enough to be on the subscriber list. Barbara Hodgson and Claudia Cohen began an exploration in "decoration, materials and processes" with "Cutting Paper" (2013), "Decorating Paper" (2015) and "Folding Paper" (2017). This 2019 publication "focuses on traditional and modern systems of analyzing repeating decorative patterns. These systems - grid, proportion, tessellation, symmetry, motif, and style & culture - are each discussed in a brief overview, and extensively illustrated, primarily with examples hand-drawn by the authors in each copy." ___DESCRIPTION: Original stencilled (by Claudia) paper over boards, vellum shelfback with gilt-stamped black leather spine label, fore-edges covered in gilt-stamped black leather, patterned endpapers, half-title and title pages in red and black, included throughout are plates printed on translucent papers, paper samples, tipped-in plates, samples mounted with cut-out slots, French-fold plates, with text figures throughout, with an extensive bibliography, edition size 30 copies plus six HC copies; (50 pp. + inserted drawings, 9 x 9 inches), designed and set by Barbara in Fournier monotype, inked and printed by hand at Heavenly Monkey, on dampened Arches wove paper. Accompanying the book is a folder of blue translucent paper with the label "Textile Grids", a portfolio of sample textile grid design leaves from Franz Donat's "Grosses Bindungs Lexicon" ("The Large Book of Textile Design", 1908). Both encased in a drop-back box covered with grey cloth, stencilled paper inset on the front board, the same paper used to cover the three sides as well as the spine, which also has a gilt-stamped black leather label which mirrors the center design of the book's spine label. ___CONDITION: Fine, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, and as new. The accompanying folder also fine as are the samples (folded as issued, they appear never to have been unfolded). The box also fine, clean, sturdy, free of wear; the inside front cover with a minute smudge of the colours used in the stencilled paper, still fine. A stunning example of the remarkable work done by Milroy, Hodgson, and Cohen. ___CITATION: Note that the quotes above were taken from the web site of Heavenly Monkey; additional details on this publication can be found there, including a short Q&A with Barbara Hodgson. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Cohen, Claudia Ilustrador. Two large quarto volumes. (55); (50)ff. From an edition of thirty-six copies, this is one of thirty, signed by the two authors. Binder Claudia Cohen and book designer Barbara Hodgson, makers of The WunderCabinet, Cutting Paper, and a four-part series on color, come together once again for their sixth collaborative work. This staggering sample book includes hundreds of papers originating from Europe, Asia, and North America between the late 1700s and modern day. These samples span the spectrum of decorating methods, including marbling, paste, embossing, pulp manipulation, lithography, block and linocut printing, and stenciling. The text is interspersed among the full-page samples and multi-sample specimen sheets and includes descriptions of their techniques and history, as well as an extensive bibliography. While each specimen is beautiful in its own right, the meticulous craftsmanship brings the entire production together. Each page of the painstaking labor of love was created with an eye to the design, from the careful selection of black or white background paper to best complement the papers, to artistic cut-paper designs featuring multiple samples and tiny details, like handwritten sample numbers. A sheet of vintage notepad paper is inserted into each volume with a handwritten list of sources for the paper samples. Letterpress printed by David Clifford in Bembo on Arches mouldmade paper. Bound by Claudia Cohen in decorated paper over leather-edged boards with a leather spine. The papers chosen for the cover of each volume reflect the techniques within; Volume One features blue and gray paste papers, while Volume Two is in bold red and navy stenciled papers. Housed in a blue cloth clamshell box, with marbled paper spine label and decorated paper accent to the interior. Prospectus laid-in. A breathtaking work. Fine.
