No Binding. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Oak, etching two plates on Chine-colle (slight lifting), lettered within image at top right with production detail: "G. Cuitt 1817" : image and text: Within the trunk of this venerable oak (according to Welch tradition) the body of Howel Sele, a powerful chieftain, residing at Nannau in Merionethshire, was immured, by order of his rival Owen Glyndwr. See Pennant, vol.1 p.348. The original sketch from which this this etching was made, was drawn from nature on the 27th day of July, 1813, by Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Bart. and on the same night, this aged tree fell to the ground. It was situated within the kitchen garden walls of Sir Robert Williams Vaughan, Bart. at Nannau, near Dolgelle. Copy on NT web site. 46x30 cm.

Front hinge cracked the full length and holding, respined some time ago, rear hinge intact, corners rubbed and bumped. Text block, sturdy. Pages, mainly clean with odd handling smudges and intact. Heavy foxing throughout. Bound in brown leather, with gilt lettering to spine. Approximately 11 ¼ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt lettering on red label, 5 raised bands dividing 6 gilt decorated compartments, faded in colour. Joints fair condition front joint is cracked the full length but holding just, rear joint is cracked at the top. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards fair to good condition brown leather boards with gilt decoration around the edges, the bottom right hand corner of the front board has some damage which has resulted in the gilt pattern being interrupted, both boards have some cracking to the leather around the edges. Page edges good condition top edge slightly darkened, fore and bottom edges are marbled. See above and photos. Internally Hinges fair to good condition front hinge is cracked about 4 inches up from the bottom and daylight can be seen, rear hinge is solid. Paste downs good condition marbled with some foxing around the edges. End papers good condition marbled with some foxing to the edges. Title good condition tanned with some foxing, there is a hand written note in pencil at the bottom of the title page. Pages good condition b/w frontispiece map of Sicilia Antiqua which is tanned and foxed, pages are lightly tanned and foxed throughout. Binding good condition worn and aged.
