Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. 'I make no apologies for being a mercenary soldier. Quite the reverse. I am proud to have led 5 Commando. I am proud to have fought shoulder to shoulder with the toughest and bravest band of men it has ever been my honour to command. I am proud that they stood when all else failed.' In July 1964, four years after gaining independence from Belgium, the Democratic Republic of the Congo came under threat from an armed rebellion that spread rapidly through the country. To suppress the rebels and bring the unrest and bloodshed in the country under control, Congolese officials enlisted the help of mercenary leader Mike Hoare. Working alongside military officials, Hoare assembled a band of several hundred men that became known as '5 Commando'. In Congo Mercenary, Hoare tells the story of the role that these men played in the rebellion, describing in gripping detail how this band of mercenaries were recruited, trained, and how they swept through the country. His team undertook four campaigns in just 18 months during which they fought rebels, liberated Stanleyville, freed European hostages and brought order back to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Hoare's experiences in the Congo and his involvement in suppressing the Simba rebellion were hugely significant from a political and a military standpoint. His influence, however, did not stop there. This account of his time in the Congo was first published in 1967 and had a huge cultural impact, as well, contributing to the glorification of the mercenary lifestyle in magazines and pulp novels, and even inspiring the 1978 war film The Wild Geese starring Richard Burton and Roger Moore. AUTHOR: Michael 'Mad Mike' Hoare was born to Irish parents in Calcutta in 1919, but spent much of his youth in England. After leaving school, he began training as an accountant and joined the Territorial Army. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in the London Irish Rifles before joining the Royal Armoured Corps as a 2nd lieutenant, eventually becoming a major. Following the war, he qualified as a chartered accountant and emigrated to South Africa. By the 1960s he yearned to be a solider again, which led him to the Congo. Hoare's military career came to an end in 1981 when he was jailed in a South African prison after unsuccessfully leading a Seychelles coup. Despite this failure, his status has remained unimpeachable, and he is widely considered as the world's best-known mercenary. Hoare is the author of six other historical memoirs. He died in in February 2020 at the age of 100. A classic work of non-fiction, first published in 1967. Hardcover in Dustjacket. Condición: Very Good +. MILITARY GENERALAn account of the part that mercenaries played during the uprising in the Congo in 1964. Prime Minister Moise Tshombe called in white mercenary soldiers to support the Congolese National Army in suppressing the armed soldiers, or "Simbas". The author commanded a unit of these mercenaries.pp. 191 First Edition #010324Thomas Michael "Mad Mike" HoareÂ(17 March 1919 â " 2 February 2020) was a British military officer and mercenary who fought during theÂSimba rebellionÂand was involved in carrying out theÂ1981 Seychelles coup d'à tat attempt.Congo Crisis (1961â "65)Hoare commanded two separate mercenary groups during theÂCongo Crisis:KatangaHoare's first mercenary action was in 1961 inÂKatanga, aÂprovinceÂtrying to rebel from the newly independentÂRepublic of the Congo. His unit was named "4 Commando".[10] Hoare relished the macho camaraderie of war, telling one journalist "you can't win a war with choirboys".Simba rebellionIn 1964, Congolese Prime MinisterÂMoà se Tshombe, his employer in Katanga, hired Hoare to command a military unit named 5 Commando,ÂArmà e Nationale CongolaiseÂ5 CommandoÂ(later commanded by John Peters;[13]Ânot to be confused withÂNo.5 Commando, the British Second World War commando force) composed of about 300 men, most of whom were from South Africa. His second-in-command was a fellow ex-British Army officer, Commandant Alistair Wicks. The unit's mission was to fight a revolt known as theÂSimba rebellion.[14]ÂTshombe distrusted GeneralÂJoseph-Dà sirà Mobutu, the commander of theÂArmà e Nationale CongolaiseÂwho had already commanded two coups, and preferred to keep the Congolese Army weak even during the Simba rebellion.[15]ÂHence, Tshombe used mercenaries who had already fought for him in Katanga to provide a professional military force. To recruit his force, Hoare placed newspaper advertisements in Johannesburg and Salisbury (modern Harare, Zimbabwe) for physically fit white men capable of marching 20 miles per day who were fond of combat and were "tremendous romantics" to join 5 Commando.[5]ÂThe moniker Mad Mike which was given to him by the British press suggested a "wildman" type of commander, but in fact Hoare was very strict and insisted the men of 5 Commando always be clean-shaven, keep their hair cut short, never swear and attend church services every Sunday.[5]ÂThe men of 5 Commando were entirely white and consisted of a "ragbag of misfits" upon whom he imposed stern discipline.[5]Â5 Commando was a mixture of South Africans, Rhodesians, British, Belgians, Irish and Germans, the last of whom were mostly Second World War veterans who had arrived in the Congo wearing Iron Crosses.[5]ÂRacist views towards blacks were very common in 5 Commando, but in press interviews, Hoare denied allegations of atrocities against the Congolese.[5]Later Hoare and his mercenaries worked in concert with BelgianÂparatroopers,ÂCuban exileÂpilots, and CIA-hired mercenaries who attempted to save 1,600 civilians (mostly Europeans andÂmissionaries) in Stanleyville (modernÂKisangani, Congo) from the Simba rebels inÂOperation Dragon Rouge. This operation saved many lives.[19]ÂHoare and the 5 Commando are estimated to have saved the lives of 2,000 Europeans taken hostage by the Simbas, which made him famous around the world.[5]ÂMany of the hostages had been so badly treated as to barely resemble humans, which added to the fame of Hoare, who was presented in the Western press as a hero.[5]ÂHe wrote about Stanleyville as occupied by the Simbas: "The mayor of Stanleyville, Sylvere Bondekwe, a greatly respected and powerful man, was forced to stand naked before a frenzied crowd of Simbas while one of them cut out his liver."[20]ÂAbout Operation Dragon Rouge, he wrote: "Taking Stanleyville was the greatest achievement of the Wild Geese. There is only so much 300 men can do, but here we were, part of a very big push and clearing the rebels out of Stan was a major victory for our side."[20]ÂHoare did not stop his men from sacking Stanleyville as the 5 Commando blew open the vaults of every bank and confiscated the alcohol in every tavern in the city.[5]The exploits of Hoare and 5 Commando in the Congo were much celebrated for decades afterward and helped contribute significantly to the glorification of the mercenary lifestyle by magazines such asÂSoldier of FortuneÂtogether with many pulp novels that featured heroes clearly modeled after Hoare. The popular image of mercenaries fighting in Africa from the 1960s to the present is that of a macho adventurers defiantly living life on their own terms together with much drinking and womanizing mixed with perilous adventures.
