Hardcover. Condición: Fair. First Edition. Scarce FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, published 1895. First published in German in 1893. Translated by M. Campbell. Edited by Henry Johnstone Campbell, M.D. Illustrated with numerous b&w figures throughout (168 illustrations). Comprehensive chapter references. Contains nine chapters. Includes index. Author Dr. Hertwig was Professor Extraordinarius of Anatomy and Comparative Anatomy, Director of the Anatomical Institute of the University of Berlin. NOTE: Important connection between three significant men of science. See following details. Volume from the collection of important geneticist & zoologist, Professor Michael J. White, with his ownership signature slip tipped-in to ffep, plus several pages with numerous pencil underlinings & marginal notes in his hand (predominantly to chapter IX: The Cell as Elemental Germ of an Organism (Theories of Heredity) - pages 336-359). Michael James Denham White (1910-1983) was Professor of Zoology 1958-64 and then Professor of Genetics 1964-75, University of Melbourne. From 1976 he was a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Population Biology at the Australian National University. He made important contributions to many aspects of cytology and cytogenetics and to evolutionary biology, including speciation theory and systematics. Some key academic positions held by Professor White include University College, London (Lecturer in Zoology 1935-40); Columbia University, USA (Rockefeller Research Fellow 1937-38); British Ministry of Food, Wartime positions as Statistician and Entomologist (1940-45); University of London, Reader in Zoology (1945-47); University of Texas, USA (Professor of Zoology 1947-53); Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, Canberra, Australia (Senior Research Fellow 1953-56); University of Missouri, USA (Associate Professor, then Professor of Zoology 1957-58); University of Melbourne, Australia (Professor of Zoology 1958-64); University of Melbourne, Australia (Professor of Genetics 1964-75); Harvard University, USA (Visiting Agassiz Professor 1968); Department of Population Biology, Australian National University, Canberra, Australia (Visiting Fellow 1976-83). White was born in London & died in Canberra (largely from: Encyclopedia of Australian Science). ALSO includes former owner's ink inscription to ffep: "D.B. Casteel, University Pennsylvania, Philadelphia" (Dr. D.B. Casteel of the Bureau of Entomology, Washington, D.C.). PLUS also includes tipped-in slip to ffep with "Sincerely, E.G. Conklin" in ink. Edwin Grant Conklin (1863-1952) was a U.S. biologist and zoologist. He was professor of biology at Ohio Wesleyan (1891-94) and professor of zoology at Northwestern (1894-96), the University of Pennsylvania (1896-1908), and Princeton (after 1908). Conklin was president of the American Society of Naturalists in 1912 and president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1936. Both Dr. Casteel & Dr. Conklin are referenced together in an (online-found) article titled "Regeneration in Compound Eyes of Crustacea". Bound in original brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine. No dustjacket. NOTE: A FAIR COPY ONLY. Binding severely cracked & shaken, all signatures loose & some detached (but all present), rear endpaper detached but present, spine appears to possibly have been glue-repaired at some point, spine with horizontal closed tear & slight wear to ends, minimal foxing, preliminary pages browned, otherwise a clean hardcover copy in need of rebinding. 368pp. Considering the over-used condition of the volume, one wonders upon the extent of useful resource material culled from it over the years by these three men of science. Uncommon first edition of a much used/read book, & an interesting & important association between three significant men of science. SB-11.
