Hard Cover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. First edition. Near fine in very good jacket. 1 inch closed tear to jacket corner, jacket spine faded, three photographs clipped from a magazine laid in. 1970 Hard Cover. xii, 275 pp. Arizonans in the First United States Volunteer Cavalry recorded a dramatic involvement in the Spanish-American War. Joined by men from New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Indian Territory, they were molded into a regiment of fighting men destined to become famous as the Rough Riders. Inflamed by the press in 1989 at the mysterious explosion of the USS Main in Havana harbor, a great many people in the United States favored an immediate declaration of war. Young men from all over the country began clamoring to enlist. None had more enthusiasm than an exuberant group of horsemen and riflemen from the Territory of Arizona. From the cattle ranges of the frontier West, from Arizona?s mines and railroads, its towns and hamlets, they came: cowboys and miners, executives, laborers, and clerks ? all answering a call to arms against the Spanish. Charles Herner has aptly and authentically set down the Rough Rider story. Against a political backdrop unfold the frenzied aspects of the crash training program in San Antonio, the emotional public reaction of the times to the situation in Cuba, and its effect on those who lived in the Territory. Memoirs, personal letters, official records, and interviews with the last survivors of the regiment provide an intimate story of those who charged into history on the heights of San Juan.

Booklet (Soft Cover with stapl. Condición: Fine. Even before the still-unexplained destruction of the U.S. battleship Maine in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898, many Americans believed that war with Spain over the question of Cuban Independence had become inevitable. After the Maine incident, a number of individuals across the nation expected an immediate declaration of war and requested authorization to organize volunteer units to serve in the conflict. Arizona's effort was one of the better organized and became the basis of Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders. On April 25, 1898 President McKinley designated that newly appointed Col. Leonard Wood would command a a special mounted regiment recruited from the 4 existing U.S. territories with Theodore Roosevelt as Lt. Col. This brochure is also designated as The Arizona Historical Society Museum Monograph No. 10, published as one centennial tribute to these warriors. Carefully handled booklet (softcover with stapled binding) is as new. No marks Copyright 1998. No edition/printing info found. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR.
