The text is illustrated with eight maps, most fold out, and all present. Brick coloured cloth covered boards, with self embossed illustration of the arms of Spain to the front panel; gilt coloured titles to the back strip. The second volume of a four volume set, dealing with the Spanish conquest of Latin America. In this volume the author deals with the dealings of Las Casas, Hernando Cortes and the Siege of Mexico. Overall the set of books deals with the response of the Indians of America to the Spanish invaders; the effect of their occupation, and conquest upon the population, religion, and manners of the native people, and the history of slavery that the Spanish imposed on the Indigenous people. This book has seen better days  please see photograph. Rubbing, softening and some fraying of the black strip edges; bumping, rubbing and fraying of the book corners. The back strip has become rubbed and faded. A few rubs and marks to the book panels  more to the rear than to the front. Some rubbing of the book edges. Light tanning of the text block edges and pages; with, offset tanning to the end pages. Age toning of the pages with the occasional foxing spot. The foldout map at the front of the book has a 2 inch tear to the lower right-hand corner of the rear panel and a little tear to the top edge of the same page. The other maps appear to be in good condition. Some stains are present on some of the maps and the occasional page. Rubbing of the book edges and panels. Age tone of the text block edges and pages. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [6], VII - IX, [3], 3 - 365, [1] pages, Deckled Front and Lower Edges (rough cut). Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Illustrator: maps. Quantity Available: 1. Bound in full green decorated morocco, all edges gilt, gilt fillets on both covers, silk headcaps, double fillets on the turn-ins.Bound by Burn (at Kirbystreet 37-38), a small printed label on the last fly leag. Binding and book in perfect condition. This copy with the autograph ex-dono of the queen to het cousin Clémentine d'Orléans. The dedication , in Victoria's hand, reads '' Pour ma chère Clémentine, de la part de sa dévouée Cousine VR (Victoria Regina), 28 Jan: 1868. Clémentine was the daughter of the last French king: Louis-Philppe ( 1773 - 1850) ; also called ''le roi bourgeois''. . She married in 1843 the German prince Auguste deSaxe-Cobourg-Gotha. Her husband was a first cousin of prince Albert, consort of Victoria. The book was published in 1868 and already at the end of January the queen had bound copies at her disposal to be send to members of the Royay Family and intimate friends as, according the editor's note, was the original purpose to write the book. The book became immensely popular and was printed in tens of thousand copies. This copy, with the interesting ex-dono autograph belongs to the very first edition and served the purpose (being send to relatives and intimate friends) as originally intended by the queen.
