Some foxing, quite heavy on 2 pages at rear; binding tight; wear at board edges& to spine. Used - Very Good. VG in half-leather.

Original uniform green buckram with gilt title on the spines. Top edges gilt. = A thorough and beautifully illustrated work on the mammals, birds, herpetology, and vertebrate fossils of the northern part of Scotland. Includes the description of new fossils. Ornithology forms the largest part, but the herpetology (recent and fossil) and mammalogy are well-represented too. Publisher's catalogue bound in the rear of vol. II. Half title to volume I spotted, binding of volume I a bit darkened, with the gilt printing rather dull; bookplate removed from the front free endpaper recto of volume II, otherwise a very good, complete set, with all the plates in very good condition. Green cloth with gilt titles to spine, top edge gilt, (broken) red ribbon page marker which has marked the 2 pages along the spine where it has been sitting, 13 bw illustrations, some engravings, some from photos, with tissue-guards. Bookplate on front pastedown of Francis Alvey Rhodes Darwin, with coat of arms and motto. Sticker on ffep - 'Harrow School Science Schools Library Biology Section By Bequest of Francis Alvey Rhodes Darwin (O. H.) 1937.' Both stickers have been stamped 'Withdrawn from Vaughan Library'. Affixed to the rear pastedown is a brown envelope containing the library card (which shows the book was never taken out!). Spine is faded with evidence of a couple of labels, now removed, at the base, spine ends are bumped, top of spine has some small tears, corners are also a bit bumped, boards are rather worn, edges have some small dents, binding is firm. Pages darkening slightly due to the age of the book, fox spots to page edges and some scattered internally, especially to tissue-guards. Overall in excellent condition for its age.
