3pp, 4to. On bifolium. Endorsed 'Copy Letter to Lord Archd. Hamilton | 11th. Feby 1801". In good condition, lightly aged and worn; folded twice. Folded twice. An interesting letter, casting light on the process of electioneering in Georgian Scotland. Written at the start of Hamilton s year-long campaign to be elected Member of Parliament of Lanarkshire, and only a couple of months before the writer s death. Information about both men is to be found in the Oxford History of Parliament. Closely allied with the family of the Duke of Hamilton, and a close friend of the philospher David Hume, Stuart played a prominent part in the celebrated Douglas Cause of the 1760s, and created a sensation in 1773 with his Letters to Lord Mansfield . He acted as an election supervisor for the 9th Duke of Hamilton, to whose children he was a guardian and tutor. He was Member of Parliament for Lanarkshire, 1774-1784; and for Weymouth, 1790-1801. Hamilton, one of the Duke s children, and educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, had declared himself for Lanarkshire the month before the date of the letter, and was soon confident of success, despite the exertions of Lord Melville . The following year, after Stuart s death, he would be elected, and would be an active member of the House until his own death. The present item consists of 73 lines of text, neatly and closely written. Addressing the letter to My Dear Lord , Stuart begins with an expression of pleasure that Hamilton has reached Edinburgh pretty expeditiously . He has forwarded to Mr Boyes the memorandum that Hamilton left on leaving London, and expects a prompt reply including a Roll of the Freeholders of the County [i.e. Lanarkshire] as it stands at present, for without that Roll we are much at a loss here and are cramped in our Operations . Stuart has been in touch about the Election matters with Hamilton s sister, who shows proper zeal and anxiety on her brother s behalf. He has also written to Sir George Colebrook for his Vote & Interest . Stuart s wife has also written in Hamilton s favour to her particular friend Miss Elphinstone , soliciting her good Offices with her Brother Mr William Elphinstone [i.e. William Fullerton Elphinstone (1740-1834)] the India Director. She has also written to her own near Relation Mr Stirling of Keir, [Stuart s wife was the daughter of Sir William Stirling of Ardoch] who from his extensive Property in the County of Lanark as well as in Perthshire, is entitled to great weight in both Counties . The second half of the letter contains more news of the election campaign, with reference to Lady Stuart of Castelmilk and her husband the late Sir John Stuart of Castelmilk. Stuart recommends that on receiving the Roll of the County Hamilton write to every Freeholder of the County . He enquires when Hamilton will be returning to Town, adding his opinion that The Duke s presence & Your Lordships here may be material, & there will certainly be an opportunity of meeting here with Sir James Stuart , who will be coming to London on parliamentary business. Should a meeting take place, Stuart feels that matters might be adjusted in a way that would please both parties . A seven-line postscript concerns Genl. Hamilton of [Manderstone?] , whom Stuart has written to.
