Pictorial dustwrapper, frayed, original buckram, gilt, pp. xix + 340, a few illustrations. 'Hackwriter, satirist, comic poet, Rowlandson's collaborator, Editor of The Times when not in prison for debt, raconteur, life-long enigma: his adventures and misadventures.' 'Thousands of nineteenth-century readers knew the Tours of Doctor Syntax, loved the old-fashioned hero and the aquatints by Rowlandson illustrating the tours, and never heard of the author, William Combe. This was exactly as Combe intended; for half a century of authorship, he never signed a single work. He preferred to be known as a gentleman of leisure, a literary dilettante, even when busily turning out book after book from his quarters in debtors' prison.'.

Condición: Gut. pp. 316-325. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to William Speed Hill. - A good and clean copy. - From the text: Laurence Sterne's sermon in Paris made a far greater stir at the time than any other he ever preached, but biographers have paid it little attention beyond a brief and usually faulty mention. Indeed, the exact date has been known only since 1969, when Joel J. Gold published a newly discovered letter of John Wilkes giving the date as 25 March 1764. Wilkes invariably attended the ambassador's chapel when he was in Paris, always jeering at the Scottish accent of the chaplain, Dr. James Trail. He was no friend of the Scots, but his evidence concerning Sterne cannot be faulted. Moreover, confirming evidence has now come to light in a letter from Lord Hertford, then the British ambassador in Paris, to his cousin and friend, Horace Walpole. Inquiry into the circumstances leading to the sermon shows that it was a central feature of a yearlong drama in Anglo-French relations, attracting great attention in both countries.
