"During the past eighteen years the Invercargill Beautifying Society has been planting trees, principally along the main highways, as follows: [.] The earliest of these plantings are now making a noticeable difference to the Southland Landscape. So much interest has been aroused that we hope the good work will continue. // This account, together with the details that follow, shows what has been tried and what has succeeded. As a record of the past it is a tribute to those who have made it possible. Furthermore, it is intended as a guide and a stimulus for the future. " - from the author's introducrion.; 8vo.

Hard Covers. Condición: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Sketch Maps Ilustrador. 1st. The author, who became a well-known historian of the southern areas of NZ's South Island had already pubished two books on the area before "Historical Southland". With this book he explores the history of the area from the first European navigators, the original Maori residents, the sealers and whalers and pioneer settlers up tp the latter years of the 1800s, by which time the most southern city in NZ, Invercargill, was firmly established as the main urban centre for the southenmost province, Southland. Among the aspects of early settlement covered by the author are some fascinating accounts including the pre-European Maori days and of the mysterious "Lost Tribe" of the south-west -- based on legend and encounter reports. Southland, bordering on the gold-rich Otago province, had its own gold-rush moments, while not "striking it rich" as did the northern neighbour. Included also are events from the coast, the high country, the agricultural lands, the mountains and the off-shore islands. Also covered are regional economics, commercial and industrial progress, the colonial days, and political differences and gaining provincial "independence" from Otago. Civic and communitiy activities and achievements are discussed as are the cultural and social foundations. NZ's Deep South has a diverse and colourful history and F G Hall-Jones has told it well and comphehensively in this fine, and now scarce book. First edition of 1945 published by H and J Smith for the Southland Historical Committee, 212 pages, including two appendices, four pages statistics/ chronology and index, 30+illustrations, mainly photographs, including portraits, seven maps, one on the rear pastedown. Blue hard cover with dulled gilt spine titles are VG+, text block is also VG+ wifh two pages fractionally misaligned during the printing process and slightly protruding at vertical and lower edges, no inscriptions.
