Later Printing. Small octavo, red wrappers, 142 pages. This copy signed and inscribed by Haimo at title page. A modestly uncommon signature. Introduction states: "The professional barman has many obligations to the public. Courtesy, cleanliness, restrictions on smoking, drinking, etc. these you all know about. One obligation, however, of equal importance, many of you tend to forget: that a drink should be the same all over the country. Clearly what is needed is some standard for drink-mixing, some way to prepare drinks in similar fashion from state to state and region to region." Book based on the private notes of Oscar Haimo, Maitre de Bar - Hotel Pierre and President of the International Bar Manager's Association. Very Good.

As 'Maitre de Bar' at New York's Hotel Pierre in the 1940s, Oscar Haimo poured drinks for the best known celebrities of his time.Oscar Haimo self-published his 'Cocktail and Wine Digest'- in the drinks trade, it was known as the 'barman's bible'. Haimo wrote from his private notes and included his own poems & drawings, and interesting blue-tinted photographic plates of people and places in NYC. About himself, Haimo said "the greatest thing in this mixologist'slife is the 'cocktail par excellence'"-- perhaps referring to his prize-winning'MacArthur' cocktail (lime juice, Triple Sec, Rum & Jamaican Rum, a dash of egg white, shaken well). Gossip-columnist Walter Winchell described this drink "as zingy as its name".Haimo indexed his cocktails A-Z. His categories include Fizzes/ Flips/ Punches/ Rickeys/ Shrubs/ Slings/ Smashes/ Sours/ Swizzles/ Toddies. "Cocktails and Wine Digest' is an engaging and handsome book of bar standards. Remarkably clean, square, bright and tight, 4"x 6"- a fine copy. Provenance: signed by OSCAR HAIMO, inscribed at Christmas,1948-- to C.W. Abbott (founder of C.W. Abbott & Co., makers of cocktail bitters). Octavo, bound in red decorated boards, 143 pages, photographs and illustrations throughout, a particularly fine copy.

He served in the management of the State Department from 1961 to 1966 and is remembered most as the only major dissenter against the escalation of the Vietnam War).
