Seltene deutsche erste Ausgabe des Hauptwerkes des "Leibwundarzt des Pabstes Clemens des vierzehnten" Carlo Guattani "De externis aneurysmatibus manu chirurgica rnethodice pertraetandis etc." (1772). Sein Kollege "Johannes Baptista Lancici, der berühmte päbstliche Leibarzt, welcher in der gelehrten Geschichte einen großen Rang behauptet, und ein vortreffliches Werk von den Pulsadergeschwülsten geschrieben hat, die sich an den inneren Schlagadern äußern, munterten den Guataani auf, sich gleichen Ruhm mit Heilung der äußerlichen Pulsadern zu erwerben . Herr Guattani hat anfänglich selber die Pulsadergeschwülste mit dem Schnitt und der Ligatur curirt, . so war er der Meynung, die zur Operation untauglichen Pulsadergeschwülste liber der Natur allein zu überlassen, als den Schenkel abzulösen, . brachte er eine Cur zur Vollkommenheit, die blos durch Umwickelung und Binden geschieht, ." Vorrede des Uebersetzers- Carlo Guattani, "bedeutender Chirurg des 18. Jahrhunderts, geboren am 30. April 1707 zu San Bartolomeo Bagni (Novara), studirte im Alter von 16 Jahren Medicin in Rom und besuchte zu seiner speciellen Ausbildung in der Chirurgie das Hospital Santo Spirito. 1738 erhielt er die Erlaubniss, chirurgische Praxis zu treiben und 1742 wurde er als Nachfolger von GIOVANNI PIETRO GAI dirigirender Arzt am genannten Hospital. 1745 veröffentlichte er seine erste Arbeit über zwei Fälle von Aneurysma (Rom 1745), ging dann nach Paris, wo er 18 Monate blieb, Mitglied der Academie Rovale de Chirurgie und correspondirendes der Academie des Sciences wurde. Dann machte er Studienreisen durch Italien und befreundete sich mit BERTRANDI in Turin, MOLINELLI in Bologna und MORGAGNI in Padua. Nach segensreicher Thätigkeit als Lehrer und Operateur in Rom starb er 1771 im Alter von 64 Jahren an Leberleiden und Ascites, nachdem er wenige Tage vor seinem Tode noch punctirt war. Das bedeutendste Werk Guattan's ist betitelt: "De externis aneurysmatibus manu chirurgica rnethodice pertraetandis etc." (Rom 1772, 4.), worin er die Therapie der Aneurysmen durch Empfehlung der systematischen Compression sehr wesentlich ; bereichert hat. Ferner hat sich Guattani durch Verbesserung der Ösophagotomie verdient gemacht, beschrieben in: "Mém. sur l'oesophagotomie" (Mém, de l'Acad. roy. de chir. III, p. 351). Er beschrieb auch einen Fall von Echinococcus hepatis: "Observation anatomique sur une grande quantité d'hydatides sorties d'une tumeur survenue à la région du foie" (Acad. roy. des sciences de Paris 1767, pag. 44)." In 4° (23,5x17,5 cm); VIII, 31, (1) pp. e 4 c. di tav. fuori testo. Legatura coeva in piena pelle marmorizzata con dorso a 5 nervi e ricchi fregi ai tasselli. Qualche strofinatura e lieve difetto. Tagli spruzzati in rosso. Qualche lievissima brunitura, qualche leggerissimo alone e nel complesso,all'interno, esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Prima assai rara edizione di questo importante studio del grande medico originario di San Bartolomeo Bagni (Novara), Guittani Carlo (1709-1773). Fu chirurgo presso l'Arciospedale romano di S. Spirito in Sassia dove ben presto sostituì Rattazzi, il quale insieme a G. P. Gai che reggeva la cattedra di chirurgia universitaria, erano i due chirurghi principali della Roma dell'epoca. Intorno al 1740 conobbe mons. Antonio Leprotti, archiatra pontificio, che lo introdusse nel suo salotto dove si incontravano tutti i più famosi medici romani del tempo. Nel 1742, alla morte di Gai, prese il posto di quest'ultimo come chirurgo primario e lettore di anatomia e chirurgia dell'Ospedale. Poco dopo stessa carica gli venne affidata nell'ospedale di S.Gallicano, in Trastevere. Ricoprì anche il ruolo di chirurgo del tribunale del governatore. "Nel 1745 pubblicò, nella forma della historia ippocratica, il resoconto di due casi clinici esemplari riguardanti gli aneurismi (Historiae duae aneurysmatum, quorum alterum in brachio per chirurgicam operationem sanatum, in femore alterum paucos intra dies lethale fuit, Romae 1745, ristampato poi nella raccolta De externis aneurysmatibus, ibid. 1772, pp. 135-194); a chiarire e perfezionare le metodiche di intervento su tali affezioni vascolari il G. dedicò poi gran parte della sua carriera di chirurgo." Quest'opera è considerata una delle prime e più importanti descrizioni di operazioni chirurgiche eseguite su casi di aneurisma. Dal 1746 fu inviato dal Governo Pontificio a Parigi per studiare le ultime tecniche mediche di ostetricia e litotomia. Qui si distinse talmente che ben presto gli venne chiesto di diventare socio nell'Académie Royale de chirurgie, istituita quattro anni prima, e divenne corrispondente dell Académie Royale des Sciences. Nel 1747 fu medico di campo al seguito delle armate francesi impegnate nella guerra delle Fiandre acquisendo enormi conoscenze nelle cure delle ferite da armi da fuoco. Ritornato da Parigi acquistò le più moderne apparecchiature mediche per l'ospedale del S. Spirito facendone uno degli ospedali più avanzati della penisola italiana. In questo anno viaggiò molto per l'Italia dove conobbe alcuni dei più celebri medici e chirurghi del tempo come Morgagni, Bertrandi e Moscati. Nel 1748 rientrato definitivamente a Roma si diede all'insegnamento ed entra a far parte del Collegio degli archiatri pontifici prima come chirurgo soprannumerario di Benedetto XIV e poi, sotto il pontificato di Clemente XIII, come chirurgo segreto del papa. "Nella pratica giornaliera orientava gli allievi verso la semplificazione delle medicazioni, secondo l'orientamento prevalente nella medicina illuministica; l'esperienza parigina aveva inoltre rafforzato nel G. l'idea che una chirurgia affrancata dalle origini "meccaniche" dovesse rivendicare l'esclusiva di tutte le operazioni (litotomia, cataratta, siringatura delle urine) per le quali empirici e professionisti, come "norcini" e "preciani", continuavano a detenere privilegi e incarichi ospedalieri. Nel 1751 il G. ottenne dalla direzione del S. Spirito che la qualifica di litotomo e gli insegnamenti pratici relativi fossero uniti al ruolo del primariato, consentendo in tal modo che quelle operazioni divenissero patrimonio stabile della professione chirurgica.". Prima rara edizione di importantissimo studio medico.
