Original Embossed Cloth. Condición: Excellent. Portrait frontispiece, 396pp. Publisher's embossed green cloth with the spine lettered in gilt. A clean, strong and beautiful copy. Hillard was a great admirer of McClellan and felt that he was the victim of President Lincoln's own self-doubt and mismanagement of the war. When McClellan decided to oppose Lincoln for the presidency in 1864, Hillard wrote this book in the hopes of helping McClellan defeat the "incompetent" Lincoln.

8vo publisherâ  s cloth, 396 pp. Cloth a little faded, and some edge and spine wear; some foxing at edges, bookplate on front pastedown. Overall very good. McClellan (1826-1885) was a major general, presidential candidate, and the governor of New Jersey. McClellan would come to lead the Union army in 1861 after it was defeated at the Battle of Bull Run. While many politicians had 'great expectations' for McClellan, he seemed more inclined to train than fight. As commander of the Army of the Potomac, he failed to make any real progress against Confederate troops, and ultimately was relieved of command by Lincoln. The present work, which was published during his run for the presidency, attempts to provide a more sympathetic and positive picture of McClellan. The tone of the work appears, not surprisingly defensive, but it does provide a lot of detail on McClellan's military career. ANB.
