Hardcover. Condición: Good. First Printing [Stated]. xii, [2], 365, [5] pages. Illustrations. References. Index. Ex-library copy with usual markings. Some marking blacked out. This book represents the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on the Pathophysiology of Combined Injury and Trauma, held at Wintergreen, Va. in February, 1985 that was edited by investigators from the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, Bethesda, Md. The term "combined injury" refers to the effects of radiation, wounds, burns, and blunt trauma in various combinations often occurring acutely and simultaneously. Clearly, this is a topic of both historical and contemporary importance. Major gains in this area are reflected in the tremendous salvage of life and limb in Vietnam compared with World War I. One must remember that providing medical aid to survivors of a nuclear or conventional catastrophe will be difficult with procedures in use today. The work described in this symposium--in the posters, the invited presentations, and the discussion times--focused our attention on some new approaches which may some day enable the medical professionals to prevent injury and effect simplified treatment of seriously injured people. It was sincerely hoped that the medical advances that would come from the studies such as described in this symposium would never be needed to treat victims of a nuclear disaster but that such advances would be used only to better the life for trauma victims and other patients.
