[Social history] FOURTH EDITION. Octavo (17 x 10cm), pp.[6]; xii; 132; [4]. Contemporary speckled calf, gilt titles to a recent black title label on spine. Marbled endpapers. Two ownership inscriptions to flyleaf, internally clean, toned to edges. Boards rubbed and worn, splits along both joints but binding still firm, corners bumped, chips from spine ends. Good. Written in 1761 on the death of his wife, Dr. Gregory's famous book of advice to his daughters was first published by his son James posthumously in 1774. Running through at least six editions in its first year alone, the huge popularity of the work attests its influence on the social mores of early English novelists such as Jane Austen.
