FIRST EDITION 1885, 8vo, 180 x 110 mm. 7 x 4¼ inches, cream paper covered boards illustrated orange and black on both covers, lettered black and orange, 108 pages. Frontispiece, 41 very pretty line drawings, all sizes, and 26 decorative initials printed brown, text printed black. Expertly rebacked with most of original spine laid on although the letters of title are rather worn, yellowish tinge to paper used on hinges, corners slightly worn, boards slightly stained and a bit worn. Occasional faint fingermark, otherwise contents very nice. A good copy. Schuster 71,1a. The illustrations were re-used with colour for the Almanacks of 1889 and 1895. The book offers a progressive series of easy and familiar lessons for children, and is a charming example of Victorian educational and children's books. Condition: The boards are a little dusty, spine a little discoloured, inside the pages are clean but segments are cracking due to age. Very good bright clean copy. Size 7 x 4.5 inches (18 x 11.5 cm).

A lovely copy of this popular 1885 lesson and spelling book for young children, with charming line drawings in brown throughout by Kate Greenaway. (The second issue had coloured illustrations). Protected in clear removable acetate jacket. In publisher's original paper covered boards, printed in red and black, with speckled fore, top and bottom edges. Very minor foxing to front endpapers only. Age toning to boards and spine as is usual with this edition, but otherwise unmarked. Corners are nicely sharp although bottom two have tiny areas of paper loss at points. Again as is usual for this edition, the spine has a central longitudinal crease ( the paper is not split). All titles are clear and bright. Small area of creasing and shelf wear at top of spine that has resulted in very minor chip. Spine edge has 1cm paper slit. Internally and externally sound, with no damage or strain to hinges or guttering. The page block is particularly good,clean bright and tight, and looks hardly if ever opened. No inscriptions or previous owners' names.
