Green enlisted as a private in the (2nd NC which became the 12th) in 1861 where he earned a commission a few months later. Defeated in a commissioning re-election he served as an aide-de-camp on Generals Rodes and Daniel s staffs. He was promoted to full colonel in 1862. He was captured at Roanoke Island but was paroled shortly after. He suffered a head wound at Gettysburg on Day One and was captured again. The book is a full biography containing exploits during the Texas War of Independence, plantation life and political activities. WITH GEN. LAWRENCE S. BAKER ASSOCIATION: After attending the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York (graduating in the Class of 1851 - apparently last in his class), Baker served on the western frontier of the United States as a Lieutenant of the Mounted Rifle Regiment. He resigned his commission in the United States Army in May of 1861 and tendered his services to his native state, North Carolina. Appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st North Carolina Cavalry and assigned to the cavalry brigade commanded by Wade Hampton, he participated in all the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Peninsular Campaign until Gettysburg, a few weeks after which he received his commission as Brigadier General. Several times wounded, he suffered intensely from his wounds and assumed post command of the Second Military District in North Carolina in 1864. In March of 1865 he commanded the North Carolina Junior Reserve brigade in the final battles in North Carolina, most notably at Bentonville. Post-war, he engaged in farming, and later became a railway agent at Suffolk, Virginia. where he resided until his death. REFERENCES: DORN II 844 (2nd Battalion NC Inf.). Signed by Author(s).
