Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. An amazing book of translations of Sholom Aleichem--many lost or forgotten pieces--and also many articles on the world of Sholom Aleichem, including on the lower east side of New York. . This copy is in near fine condition: the text is bright, clean, and unmarked, but pages starting to age; binding tight; however, the front cover and the edges show some age spots. The illustrations and many photos are excellent. We have a five star rating because of our fulfilment success and because our descriptions are accurate. We guarantee: NO NASTY SURPRISES. Because of the weight of this book, sorry but no foreign orders accepted.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Melech Grafstein s Sholom Aleichem Panorama; The Jewish Observer, London, Ontario, 1948. From the foreword This volume is dedicated to the memory of the immortal Yiddish humorist and man of letters, Sholom Aleichem. Living in a city remote from centres of Yiddish literary production, with no access to libraries, and no opportunities for necessary research, made our labours doubly arduous. Add to this the difficulty of finding competent translators, for ninety-five percent of the material was written in Yiddish. In undertaking this present work we had but one motive a desire to acknowledge, if only in a small measure, our great debt to Sholom Aleichem for the many wonderful and ecstatic hours we have spent in perusing his books. The writings of Sholom Aleichem are a lasting memorial to the vanished and fascinating world of the Russo-Polish Pale. In presenting this Sholom Aleichem volume with original drawings and woodcuts by distinguished artists, we hope to stimulate the reader to a greater interest in the life and letters of Sholom Aleichem. Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich, better known under his pen name Sholem Aleichem (1859 1916), was a Yiddish author and playwright. The 1964 musical Fiddler on the Roof, based on his stories about Tevye the Dairyman, was the first commercially successful English-language stage production about Jewish life in Eastern Europe. The Hebrew phrase (shalom aleichem) literally means "[May] peace [be] upon you!", and is a greeting in traditional Hebrew and Yiddish. This large format book bound in maroon, textured cloth simulating leather, 415 pages measuring 305mm X 230mm, is in near-fine condition. The covers are faded. The pages have marbled edges. The book is very well illustrated with black & white photographs, drawings, and musical chords. An extremely thoughtful volume in memory of a major Yiddish figure. This large and heavy volume may require additional postage.
