Plan of the town of Zutphen in central Holland, on the River Ijssel showing its defenses. List of major buildings at top right, town shield at upper left. The plan was originally published by Merian in his Topographia, and later incorporated into Gottfried's Archontoligica. Born in Basel, Switzerland, Merian spent most of his life in Frankfurt. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. Good margins, Darkened along centrefold. In very good condition. Size: 29 x 25 cm. (11½ x 10 inches).

A lovely view of the canton of Schwyz in central Switzerland. Coat of arms in centre top within title. To the right of the view is the canton's capital town of the same name and below that is Brunnen on the shores of Lake Lucerne, which stretches across the bottom half of the view. To the left, also on the shores of the lake, is the small town of Gerisaw. Within the lake is a compass as well as various sailing ships. The mountains in the background are labelled 'der Hocken' whilst a key along the bottom identifies landmarks picked out by numbers within the view. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. In fine condition. A pretty view of the Swiss city of Zug ('Tugium' being its Latin name). At the top, to the left of the title, is a coat of arms. Four principle landmarks within the town are picked out with numbers - a key listing them in the bottom right corner. Along the bottom of the view is the lake of Zugersee with ships sailing on it. The main view is of Appenzell, but in the top right corner is a view of the town of Herissaw. In the top right of the Appenzell view is the town's coat of arms, depicting a bear standing on its hind legs. The views of both towns are beautifully detailed, showing houses, churches and trees, and with the rivers labelled in both. The Appenzell view includes a dramatic backdrop of towering mountains contrasting with the tiny people, cattle and horses shown within the view. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. In very good condition. A beautiful view of the Swiss canton of Unterwald. Towns, villages, rivers and lakes are shown and labelled. A key at the bottom lists significant buildings and landmarks, which are picked out in the view by letter. In the top left corner three soldiers in armour stand in a group surrounded by a laurel wreath with a coat of arms depicting a key at the bottom. Below this is a compass rose. Copper engraving. A beautiful view of the town of Altdorf, the capital of the canton of Uri. A coat of arms in the centre of the title shows the head of a fierce bull. In the lake to the left of the scene is a compass, and along the bottom of the map runs a key to the chief landmarks corresponding with numbers marked within the view. Last on this key is "Wilhelm Tellen platt und Cappellen" referring to the statue and square to William Tell at the heart of the town. This Swiss national hero is of special significance to the town since it is rumoured to be where the William Tell legend took place. Copper engraving. Uncoloured. A spectacular view of the town of Glarus in east central Switzerland, entitled at the top with both its Italian name (Glarona) and its French name (Glaris). Impressively craggy mountains tower in the background with the very picturesque town laid out at their feet, a river running past in the foreground. A very picturesque view of the city of Sion, entitled here at the top centre with its Roman name 'Sedunum' as well as its German one 'Sitten', between these two names is a coat of arms. Two castle-crowned crags tower over the city and mountain ranges dominate the background. In the bottom centre is a compass, and below that, running along the bottom of the picture is a key to the principle buildings which are picked out within the view by letters. Copper engraving.
