Published by Bobbs Merrill. Humorous novel of a small town rivalry set in East Tennessee with bigotry as a central theme. Givens was born in Tennessee, which provided the background for three of his novels. From about 1928 to 1932, he wrote for The Saturday Evening Post as 'Colonel Givens', a name he used for his 1930s pulp writing. Givens wrote short stories for Detective Fiction Weekly (1930-1932), Clues (1930), New Detective Magazine (1944) and Thrilling Detective (1945). His serial 'Anchor Money' in Flynn's Detective Fiction (1943) was later published as the novel Big Mike (1953). His novels included The Rose Petal Murders (1935), The Jig-Time Murders (1936), All Cats Are Gray (1937), The Doctor's Pills Are Stardust (1938) and The Devil Takes a Hill Town (1939), which was adapted into a Broadway play in 1946. During his newspaper career, he had worked for the Detroit Free Press and the old Detroit Times, The Times Picayune in New Orleans and The Herald Examiner in Chicago. He was the author of many stories in The Saturday Evening Post and was active in public relations work in Detroit.
