Subsequent chapters include the whaling era, exploring the hinterland, developing agriculture and commerce, the growth and development of the major town and port at Timaru, the provision of communications, infrastructure, government and civic facilities, political issuse, education and community activities. The penultimate chapter examines the mountainous Mt Cook/Southern Alpine area lying at South Canterbury's western boundary, with sport covered in the last.
