Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. For sale is Volume 1 only of "A Commentary on the Scientific Writings of J. Willard Gibbs," focusing on Thermodynamics. This rare hardcover First Edition, published by Yale University Press in 1936, features very dark navy blue cloth-covered boards with elegant gold print on the spine. Despite some signs of shelf wear, including minor rubbing at the corners where the boards are just beginning to show under the cloth and light surface scuffing to the boards, the covers are in great shape, presenting the book well. Inside, a former owner's bookplate is fixed to the front pastedown, and there is minor abrasion to the front flyleaf. However, the interior pages are clean and unmarked, maintaining the integrity of the text. The binding is square and tight, ensuring the structural stability of the book. It will be carefully packaged for shipment to protect it from the elements. For more information or pictures regarding this rare first edition, please feel free to contact us.

First edition. Second edition. 8vo. Pictorial wrappers, 59 pp., introduction, illustrated, plates, portraits. The second edition is considered to be the "best edition," as it corrects statements made in the first edition published earlier in the same year, and provides the complete details of John Doyle Lee's second trial. The first trial had seven Mormons and five Gentiles on the jury, and Lee was acquitted of any wrong doing by a verdict of seven to five. There was such a hue and cry at the results of this verdict by citizens that the leaders of the Mormon community realized that justice must be served and Lee was tried for the second time. The results of that trial and John Lee's execution are fully covered in this booklet. Wear to corners and spine of wrappers. Wrappers are loosely held by one of two binding staples. Light soiling across the top edge of front wrapper. Very good.

Paperback. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No Dust Jacket. First Edition. Red stringbound book in wrappers with black imprint on front. Wrapper is fairly worn on spine yet still intact. Light soiling and wear . Binding holding well; several signatures are slightly pulling. All edges lightly soiled. Interior is clean. From the author of "Lights and Shadows of Mormonism" and "Mountain Meadow Massacre", this account is Gibbs' least known work and most seductive title for which he was excommunicated from the Church for apostacy against the chief conspirators for the political as well as spiritual control of Utah, and for general neglect of duty. A fictional account. Not common on the market. Flake Draper 3551 ; B & W Illustrations & Photographs; Oblong 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 228 pp.
