Librería: ReadInk, ABAA/IOBA, Los Angeles, CA, Estados Unidos de America
Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Later Printing. (no dust jacket; top edge gilt, "Acme" devices on spine (gilt) and front cover (embossed in black)) [shelfworn along bottom edge but otherwise a good sound copy, binding/hinges fully intact, slight bumping to corners, some wear to cloth at spine ends, minor dampstaining to top edges of several illustration plates (no impact on actual illustrations)]. (frontispiece + 15 B&W plates) Novel about a man's obsessive romance with a beguiling ghost, originally published in France in 1866 (subtitled "nouvelle fantastique"), and subsequently in the U.S. by D. Appleton in 1877. (A slightly later issue of the Rand, McNally edition appeared in 1898 (per the Library of Congress record) under the title "Stronger than Death.") Gautier (1811-1872), a critic, poet, journalist and dramatist, was an influential figure in 19th-century Parisian literary circles, and also a noted cat-lover. Two interesting aspects of this printing: (1) It appears to be a different translation from the 1877 Appleton edition; no translator is credited on that book, but the present volume contains a dedication page specifically for this translation, dated Chicago, July 1, 1890. (2) The "Acme" decorative devices embossed on both the spine (in gilt) and front cover (in black, almost invisible on the very dark blue cloth), which would seem to indicate that this a slightly later issue of the book, by a different distributor (all the internals reference Rand, McNally only). In any event, an uncommon printing/binding for this title.
