Pepys (1633-1703; properly pronounced to rhyme with 'tapes', but more often than not undignified as 'peeps'), English diarist and statesman; secretary to the Admiralty from 1672 and president of the Royal Society from 1684; the diary covers the period from January 1, 1660 to May 31, 1669 and contains a vivid picture of life during the English Restoration.
