383p., 7.5x5 inch buckram boards titled spine and cover and bearing publisher's slug (we are unsure if this is custom casing or a Hutchinson presentation run), rather worn; cleverly and warmly inscribed and signed by Gardiner in 1950 from Santa Barbara CA on the f.e.p., two typed quotes from reviews taped to r.e.p., also find label on rear pastedown which reads: 'L 10,000 United Nations Literary Competition Selection". Novel of a woman bullfighter in the decade ending in 1931, but with the Civil War as its subtext. First Novel Library 114. "[First Novel Library] refers to a matter independent of the United Nations contest, in which the novel was one of first three selections. That contest was not for "First" novels. But in addition, the publisher chose "Salt of Youth" for this "First Novel Library", a designation of a few novels each year for decades past - called "Distinguished Firsts" " - previous owner's pencilled note on the title page.
