Hardcover. Condición: Fine. 4to, pp. [8], 227, [1, errata], with woodcut device on title and woodcut diagrams in the text; occasional light dampstaining, but a very attractive copy in early vellum. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION OF FRANCESCO PATRIZI'S IMPORTANT WORK ON THE CONCEPT OF 'SPACE'. Patrizi s importance in the history of science rests primarily on his highly original views concerning the nature of space, which have striking similarities to those later developed by Henry More and Isaac Newton. His position was first set out in De rerum naturae libri II priores, alter de spacio physico, alter de spacio mathematico (Ferrara, 1587) Rejecting the Aristotelian doctrines of horror vacui and of determinate "place," Patrizi argued that the physical existence of a void is possible and that space is a necessary precondition of all that exists in it. Space, for Patrizi, was "merely the simple capacity (aptitudo) for receiving bodies, and nothing else." It was no longer a category, as it was for Aristotle, but an indeterminate receptacle of infinite extent. His distinction between "mathematical" and "physical" space points the way toward later philosophical and scientific theories. The primacy of space (spazio) in Patrizi s system is also seen in his Della nuova geometria (Ferrara, 1587), the essence of which was later incorporated into the Nova de universis philosophia. In it Patrizi attempted to found a system of geometry in which space was a fundamental, undefined concept that entered into the basic definitions (point, line, angle) of the system. The full impact of Patrizi s works on later thought has yet to be evaluated (DSB). Patrizi s works seem to have been widely known throughout Europe and directly influenced some of the Cambridge Platonists, notably Joseph Glanville and Henry More. Henry More can be seen as a link between Patrizi and Sir Isaac Newton. Patrizi s long arguments for an isotropic, unchanging, immobile and infinite space, his vehement denunciation of the Aristotelian concept, and his establishment of space as a new philosophical term can finally be said to have taken root when Newton was able to discuss absolute space after writing: I do not define space as being well known to all " (John Christopher Henry, Francesco Patrizi and the concept of space , doctoral thesis, University of Leeds, 1977, pp. 167-168). Patrizi studied at Ingolstadt, at the University of Padua (1547-1554), and at Venice. While in the service of various noblemen in Rome and Venice he made several trips to the East, where he perfected his knowledge of Greek, and to Spain. He lived for a time at Modena and at Ferrara, before being appointed to a personal chair of Platonic philosophy at the University of Ferrara by Duke Alfonso II d Este in 1578. He remained there until 1592, when Pope Clement VIII summoned him to a similar professorship in Rome, a post he held until his death. Poggendorff II, col. 374; Riccardi I 254; Sommerville p. 3; STC Italian p. 493; not in Adams; OCLC records eight US locations, at Chicago, Columbia, Wisconsin, Burndy, Michigan, Illinois, Temple, and Cornell, and a copy at the Fisher Library, Toronto.

VERY RARE FIRST EDITION OF FRANCESCO PATRIZI'S IMPORTANT WORK ON THE CONCEPT OF 'SPACE'. In-4°, 2cc, 40pp (pp37, 38, 39, 40 repeated), woodcut vignette on the title page, large woodcut initial. The fortune of the Dalmatian philosopher Francesco Patrizi began with the call to teach in Rome strongly supported by Clement VIII Aldobrandini, his fellow student in Padua. It was necessary for Neoplatonic teaching to once again obscure the dangerous Aristotle, and Patrizi accepted the invitation to do so from the chair of La Sapienza university. In 1584 Teodoro Angelucci attacked the Patrizi's reading of Aristotelian metaphysics, to which Patrizi responded with the Apologia contra calumnias Angelutij. It is precisely on the field of metaphysics that the clash between the two philosophers focuses, one certain that Aristotle has fully satisfied the criteria of uniqueness, the other who sees Plato as the only one whose philosophy can be favorably put into Christian thought. . Very rare book, apparently all copies in OCLC are all facsimiles.

4to. (6), 92 ff. With armorial title woodcut, 12 folding engraved plates and several woodcut initials. Contemporary limp vellum with handwritten title to bottom edge. First edition. - A major study on the ancient Roman army, based on the author's reading of Polybius, Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus. Patrizi posits that the art of warfare is the basis of peace and human happiness. His benchmark are the Romans, whose army he views as superior to all others - in particular that of the Ottomans: if the Christian armies could only emulate the military forces of ancient Rome, he writes, they need not fear the Turks. The only modern army to come close to this ideal, he feels, was that of Duke Alfonso I d'Este gelungen, whose methods of fortification and siegecraft were exemplary. It is therefore perhaps little surprise that Patrizi dedicates his work to Alfonso II d'Este, the ruler of Ferrara and the grandson of Alfonso I. The engravings show military formations and camps, individual legionaries, attack formations, etc. - Binding repaired with modern endpapers. A good copy with very insignificant traces of worming to the title and the final two leaves, as well as a few repaired edge defects. - BM-STC Italian 493. Adams P 437. Edit 16, CNCE 47279. Marginal rust spots on leaves AA1-8, a few very light damp stains. A very good, genuine copy.RARE FIRST ITALIAN EDITION of one of the most important documents for the history of political and educational thought of fifteenth century Humanism. It was begun around 1462, completed in 1468 and first published by Jean Savigny in 1518 under the title De institutione reipublicae libri novem. It has often been seen as a precursor of Machiavelli's Principe and had a great influence on Thomas Elyot's Gouvernour (cf. J. Schlotter, Thomas Elyot's ?Governor' in seinem Verhältnis zu Francesco Patrizi, Freiburg/Br., passim). The work covers the whole field of civic Humanism discussing all questions of state administration, law (moral and civil), town and country planning (cf. P.N. Pagliara, Vitruvio: da testo a canone, in: ?Memoria dell'antico nell'arte italiana?, S. Settis, ed., Torino, 1986, III, pp. 28-30), and the management of a family (the duties of a husband and of a wife, the education of children, cf. G. Müller, Bildung und Erziehung im Humanismus der italienischen Renaissance, Wiesbaden, 1969, pp. 117, 36). Patrizi recommends protection for merchants and tradesmen who contribute to the enriching of a country, considers that the state should provide the means of subsistence to the population if necessary, and also deals with the importance of culture (fine arts, music, theatre, literature, libraries), medicine and the great physicians of the past, gymnastic exercises, etc. (cf. M. Capelli, ?Ad actionem secundum virtutem tendit'. La passione, la sapienza e la prudenza: ?vita activa' e ?vita contemplativa' nel pensiero umanistico, in: ?The ways of life in classical political philosophy?, F. Lisi, ed., Sankt Augustin, 2004, pp. 203-30).?Patrizi's text deals with the disposition and government of a city-state Republic, understood in the terms of the contemporary political reality of fifteenth-century Italy, describing and analyzing the political, social and economic conditions that prevail in such an urban context. Significantly, the treatise does not confine itself to a theoretical discussion of the city as locus of government, but examines the urban fabric itself, giving ample space to a discussion of the role of the architect in planning the city, and the disposition of streets, piazzas and individual buildings, both public and private. Architecture and government are thus bound together, so that a well-governed city will be architecturally well-ordered, and vice versa [.] While, in some respects, the most original feature of Patrizi's treatise is the way in which he links social and political issues of government to the question of urban life. Patrizi viewed the city-state as the natural resolution of man's need to be a ?social animal', and in Book I he outlines the ways in which urban society should be ordered to maintain equality among citizens. While Book II deals with the varieties of professions that should exist in the city, Book III instead focuses on public offices and the procedures that should be observed in nomination and election. Indeed the core three books relate specifically to the family, in its public and private role. While Book IV discusses the function of the family and the paterfamilias in the government of private affairs, Book V and VI project the family onto the public scene. So that virtues honed in the family setting are given a public purpose. It is thus in Book V that the public virtues of government, discussed in Book III, are revealed as being an attribute to the patrician class, showing that these families are naturally suited to rule. A clear statement in favor of the ancestral aristocr. Book.

Despite aesthetic flaws, this work is nearly 500 years old and remains quite readable. Please see photos. From the famed Aldine Press. on the Essence of Humanism, first edition. A selection of discourses , divided into nine books, the work covers a wide range of subjects including the principles of statecraft, the meaning of life (particularly the nature of virtue, health, honest pleasures and wealth), literature and law. Patrizi, detached from the reigning debate that focused on the difficult relationships between the Church and the Empire, proposed a society based on the humanist conception of autonomous man, freed from the ties of hierarchical power. Francesco Patrizi (1413-1492) writer, politician and humanist, was appointed bishop of Gaeta by Pope Pio II in 1460. Involved in the Sienese conspiracy in 1456, he was forced into exile in Verona, where he came into contact with various humanists, including the circle of Antonio Brognanigo. He wrote in Latin, being translated into Italian only forty years later, by Aldus. The present work, in the Tuscan vernacular edited by the humanist Giovanni Fabrini, was widely read and won acclaim for its social and political realism in its discussion of new humanist ideas. This particular text was owned by Prince Augustus Frederick, House of Hanover, 1801-1843. Quite scarce.

Two parts in one volume, 4to, pp.[lxiv], 407, [1]; [viii], 250, [6]; a couple of quires a little browned and foxed, but a very good copy in contemporary limp vellum; ownership inscription of Orazio Lombardelli (see below) to the verso of the rear free endpaper, followed by a devotional poem in Latin couplets.First edition, a copy with contemporary provenance, of a major Renaissance rejection of Aristotelian literary aesthetics. Patricius was born in Cres, off the coast of Dalmatia, and is sometimes described as Croatian, sometimes as Italian. 'Francesco Patrizi of Cherso (1529 1597) was a leading critic of the dominant Aristotelianism of the times. Not to be confused with the earlier humanist and political theoretician, Francesco Patrizi of Siena (1413 1494), Patrizi of Cherso focused his attention on a wide variety of philosophical, scientific, artistic and literary issues, providing in his "New Philosophy" a major alternative to earlier schools of thought and a model which later thinkers such as Galileo Galilei no doubt found valuable in developing the mathematized physics which would prove the dominant force in the rise of early modern science' (Purnell in Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). This treatise on poetics rejects the rules and restrictions that had applied to most genres since Aristotle, in favour of an openness to inspiration. This copy was owned by Orazio Lombardelli (1545 1608), a man of letters and pedagogue from Siena, author of several works on punctuation, educational primers, and treatises on rhetoric. It is possible that the Latin verse compositions penned on the rear free endpaper are his own inventions. One is a six-line set of couplets of devotional and penitential sentiments beginning 'Da venia Petro, veniam mitissime Iesu', and the other is a single couplet in praise of the Virgin, 'Dum tibi ad Elisabeth '.BM STC Italian, p.493; EDIT16 30129. Patrizi served as governor of Foligno in the Papal States and bishop of Gaeta. His political writings on had influence on the ideas of civic Humanism and is considered a predecessor of Machiavelli.

A clear statement in favor of the ancestral aristocracy's capacity to rule come in chapter One of Book VI, where Patrizi provides a definition of urban society as being made up of three classes: the ancient nobility, a middle-ranking group of worthy citizens, and a majority suited only to being governed. However, it is in the last section of the treatise that Patrizi addresses themes relevant to an understanding of the Pope's architectural patronage in Siena. Specifically, chapter Eleven of Book VIII discusses private architecture in the urban context. Patrizi advises the families in public office should invest in a palace suited to their status, but this should be a ?beautiful home'. He recommends the use of ?sancta mediocritas' (a golden mean), so that a building will display neither the opulence nor the avarice of its owner, but rather that the palace will beautify the collective image of the city?
