Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. Photos, portraits, some maps Ilustrador. 1st Edition. In his extended sub-title the author explains his book as "A description of the manner of life, trials and difficulties of some of the pioneer doctors, of the places in which, and of the people among whom, they laboured."' His research provided literally dozens of "pioneer" doctors, the first of which settled in the Waikouaiti area of Otago late1830s, gradually reducing his workload as other practitioners set-up nearby. His 'biog' of each pioneering doctor provides a different aspect to their life-style and treatment. This is much more than a study of old-time medicine and health care, but follows also the development of the communities in which they practiced. By covering a segment of history often over-looked, his book gives insight into what can be describeded as the beginning of NZ's health system. Green covers with gilt front titles are VG with few small. unobtrusive, bubbles to the cloth adjacent top front edge. Spine strip is sunned with dulled titles. Decorative wood-grain end papers.text block excellent. no inscriptions. B/w photographs include rare views of region's settlements, homes, portraits of doctors and others.
