London, Macmillan and Co., 1895. 8vo. Publisher's original blue cloth, image of deer blocked in gilt to upper cover, lettered in gilt to spine; pp. xvi, [2], 297, [2, advertisements]; frontispiece and numerous illustrations to text, 3 folding colour maps; some rubbing and a few minor marks to binding, occasional very light foxing, but still a good copy. First edition. In 1892 Frederick Jackson began preparations for the Jackson-Harmsworth expedition to Franz Josef Land. To gain some experience of winter travel, he undertook a preliminary journey along the coast of the Barents Sea from Vaygach Island to Varanger Fjord. During this time, Jackson spent a year with the local Samoyed people, learning from them skills that proved invaluable for the success of the later Jackson-Harmsworth expedition. In Oslo, Nansen's brother Alexander had been helpful in testing and selecting skying equipment and sledges. It was Jackson who later more or less accidentally saved Fridtjof Nansen. Arctic Bibliography 7940.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No Dust Jacket. First Edition. 1st Edition: Vol I xxi, 551 pages, Vol II xxii-xv, 580 pages. Appendices, indices. The party established winter quarters at Cape Flora, Franz Joseph Land, and remained there for 3 years. By sheer coincidence, Fridtjof Nansen and Hjalmar Johansen encountered Jackson's camp in June of 1896 during the Fram Expedition, and enjoyed several weeks of generous hospitality (after surviving through the winter on walrus and bear meat). Throughout their stay, the party made sledge journeys in the archipelago, surveyed, made scientific collections, hunted, and described the polar night. Includes a chapter on scurvy. [AB 7943]. "This is an unvarnished tale of a thousand consecutive days spent in the Arctic, printed almost word for word as it was written--while the facts and impressions were fresh in my memory, in our hut, or tent, when on sledging and boating journeys in Franz-Josef Land. It is a simple, true account and statement of facts incident to our life and work there, plain facts, penned by a plain man." (from the author's note).
