Brown marble decorative endpapers. Frontispiece drawing of L'Abbé Fénélon with a group of children. A comparison of Jewish and Christian practices by Abbé Claude Fleury, a leading early 18th century French cleric and the confessor to Louis XV. The vast majority of Fleury's section on Judaism deals with biblical Israel, with a brief discussion at the end as to how post biblical Judaism degenerated into Pharisees, Sadducees and Essenes before moving on to Christianity, which Fleury saw as the true heir to the biblical religion. His understanding of Judaism came largely from the Bible, Josephus, Church fathers such as Origen, Tertullian and Clement of Alexandria and Johannes Buxtorf the Elder. Text in French. Stamp from previous owner. Significant wear to cover. Some foxing to page edges. Binding in overall fair to good-, interior in good to good+ condition. Leather. Condición: Very Good. Leather. 12mo. Chez Jean-Thomas Herissant, Paris, France. 1754. Vii, 364 pgs. Bound in full leather boards with gilt titles and raised bands present to the spine. Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Born at Lodève, 26 June, 1653; died at Paris, 29 January, 1742. He was a protégé of Cardinal de Bonzi and become chaplain to Maria Theresa in 16790, and to Louis XIV in 1683. He was appointed bishop of Fréjus in 1698, but resigned the see in 1715, when he received the Abbey of Tournus and was appointed tutor to the young Louis XV. Naturally cold and imperturbable, he remained in the background during the regency. When Louis XV attained his majority in 1723, it was at the instance of Fleury that the Duc de Bourbon was made prime minister, and quarrelling with the Duke, Fleury pretended to retire to Issy. Louis XV, however, who admired and loved his tutor, sent the Duke into exile, and entrusted the government to Fleury. True to his habits of discretion, and accustomed, as Duclos says, "to bridle the envious", he never assumed the title of prime minister. He was made cardinal in September, 1726, and until his death remained the guiding spirit in French politics. E-001; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
