Paperback. Condición: Very Good. For over three hundred years, from the early fifteenth century until the mid-Victorian era, there was a continuously growing demand for portrait miniatures, and an ever expanding number of artists qualified to satisfy that demand. The collection of miniatures in the Fitzwilliam Museum gives a compact and comprehensive survey of the development of this national art. It illustrates the course of its progress through the work of almost every major master in the genre, with works of the highest excellence. This book provides an introduction to the history of portrait miniatures: ninety-six items from the collection are described, and each item is illustrated in full colour, to bring out the subtlety and intimacy of this delicate art form. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The Fitzwilliam Museum has arguably one of the finest collections of antiquities in the United Kingdom. Assembled mainly through bequests and gifts, it is a stunning exhibition of connoisseurship. This splendidly illustrated book presents sixty-four images of the finest examples of Greek, Etruscan, Cypriot, and Roman art dating from the Bronze Age to the late Roman Period, and ranging from the monumental to the decorative. The concise text provides an introduction to the art, technology, and history for the layman, as well as new insights for the expert. Many of the objects are published here for the first time. Greek and Roman Art was given a commendation in the Best Museum Publication category awarded by the Museums Association, Gulbenkian Awards for Museums and Galleries 1998. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Laminated pictorial boards, 4to, 30 cm, 217 pp, numerous ills (some colour). Produced to accompany an exhibition that celebrated the centenary of Sydney Cockerell's appointment as Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum (1908-1937). But as the author notes ". it is not an exhibition catalogue in the strict sense of the word.Rather, it presents the history of the Fitzwilliam Museum during one of its most dynamic and enriching periods, Cockerell's Directorship. His enthusiasm was infectious, his knowledge of the arts wide ranging and profound, his acquisitiveness, energy and determination incomparable. The building was doubled in size. The collections were trebled this book is intended to take visitors round the entire Museum. It highlights Cockerell's acquisitions among the most iconic exhibits in the permanent galleries and his innovative approach to display that was followed as a model by museums and galleries in Britain and abroad. Sydney Cockerell transformed a dark, overcrowded and provincial university museum into a 'Palace of the Arts' open to 'all the world'. . My curatorial colleagues shared their immense knowledge of the collections: Lucilla Burn and Helen Strudwick advised on Assyrian, Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities, Mark Blackburn on coins and medals, Nicholas Robinson on archives, James Lin on ceramics from the Far East, Julia Poole on European pottery, metalwork, sculpture, furniture and textiles, Craig Hartley and Elenor Ling on prints ranging from Old Masters to Japanese Surimono, Jane Munro on British and French paintings and drawings, and David Scrase on the Italian and Flemish Schools as well as on many other aspects of the collections." The author goes on to thank Cristopher de Hamel for comments on her discussion of Sydney Cockerell as a manuscript scholar and collector. Fore-edge corners of front board lightly bruised, otherwise Near Fine.

Laminated illustrated wrappers, 4to, 29 cm, 415 pp, 184 colour ills. 184 entries. Published to accompany an exhibition . at the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Cambridge University Library, from 26 July to 11 December 2005. From the blurb: "Cambridge is the depository of one of the greatest collections of illuminated manuscripts in the world. The present volume is published to accompany the exhibition of some two hundred spectacular Cambridge treasures - from the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Cambridge University Library, and the individual College libraries - covering a unique array of outstanding but rarely seen illuminated books. The Catalogue spans over ten centuries of book production, from the significant sixth-century Gospels of St. Augustine, to the great Romanesque Bibles such as the Bury and Dover Bibles, the exquisite and emotive devotional books of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, up to the refined, classical elegance of the Humanist books of early Renaissance Italy. Manuscripts are grouped thematically under eight headings. The catalogue entries as well as the introductory essays to each section are by well-known authorities in their field, among them the editors Paul Binski and Stella Panayotova, and Jonathan Alexander, Christopher de Hamel, Rosamond McKitterick, Nigel Morgan and Teresa Webber." "All manuscripts catalogued are illustrated in full colour, and there is a Glossary, exhaustive Bibliography, and detailed Index." Very Good. The bibliophile A R A Hobson's copy, with a FitzWilliam Musum compliments slip presenting the copy to him laid in. Also laid in is a clipping from the TLS of a full-page article by David McKitterick discussing the exhibition and two catalogues of illuminated manuscripts held in Cambridge.
