Mapa
1828 ENGLAND AND WALES A fine and quite scarce map of England Wales by Anthony Finley. The map depicts the region from the east coast of Ireland to the North Sea and from Scotland to the english channel and the top of the coast of France. The English Welsh counties have been individually highlighted by original hand colour wash.Anthony Finley (1784-1836) was an American map publisher. Little is known about his life. He is presumed to have been born in Philadelphia, where he also died. A publisher, Finley was also involved in several Philadelphia civic and professional societies such as the Philadelphia Apprentices Library. He may have been in business as early as 1809 and his first publication dates from ca. 1811. His first maps also date from this year, with two maps in Daniel Edward ClarkesTravels in Various Countries of Europe, Asia, and Africa. The first atlas published by Finley appeared in 1818, theAtlas classica, or, Select maps of ancient geography, both sacred and profane, for the use of colleges and schools in the United States. He is best known for hisA New General Atlas Comprising a Complete Set of Maps(1824), which was a bestseller. There were two editions in 1824, with annual editions until 1834. Finley was part of the first generation of American publishers who produced high quality, precise maps on American soil. He was in competition with other Philadelphia publishers, for example Henry S. Tanner. FinleysA New American Atlas Designed Principally to Illustrate the Geography of the United States of America(1826) closely mirrors TannersA New American Atlas Containing Maps of the Several States of the North American Union, with similar groupings of maps; the main difference is the smaller scale of Finleys maps. Finley printed two editions of this atlas.Size approx 27cm x 35cm with original hand colour. Blank on verso. Small broadside advertisement for Finley's New and Elegant Map of the United States. Excellent condition. It is not clear whether this small broadside was issued separately or was included, as some copies were, in FInley's New General Atlas. There is no indication at the left edge that this leaf was ever bound or tipped into a volume. Finley issued his map in 1825. This offering is dated March 27, 1824.

Condición: Very Good. This vibrant map of New York was engraved by J.H. Young and published in Philadelphia by Anthony Finley between 1826 and 1828, based on the county borders depicted and highlighted in original hand color. This was a time of rapid development and growth across the state. The Erie Canal (labeled Great Canal) opened to maritime traffic in 1825, greatly expanding economic potential in the western regions and turning Buffalo into a boomtown. Prior to the opening of the canal, transportation options were limited to navigable rivers and the dirt wagon trails that connected most of the primary settlements (shown in the thin black lines). The new avenue drastically cut the time and cost of moving goods and people from the Atlantic to the Great Lakes, greatly expanding the opportunities for settlement in the Upper Midwest. Topography is depicted pictorially, highlighting portions of the Adirondacks, Catskills, and Appalachian Mountain Ranges in the eastern part of the state. Sheet Width (in) 19.9 Sheet Height (in) 13.75 Condition Description Scattered soiling and spotting visible in several areas throughout the sheet, most evident in the lower corners and near the title block. A few small closed tears near the bottom of the centerfold, confined to the margin. About good condition overall, with beautiful original color.
