Voltaire gilt heute allgemein als der Aufklärer schlechthin, geradezu als Symbolfigur der franzà sischen Aufklärung, die auch le sià cle de Voltaire genannt wird. Entsprechend weden seine Texte primär als aufklärerisch rezipiert - sofern man sie überhaupt noch liest: Zwar ist Voltaire als schillernde Persà nlichkeit und Vielschreiber bekannt, doch nur Bruchteile seines Werks werden am Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts von einer breiteren à ffentlichkeit gelesen. Als Ganzschrift findet einer seiner kürzeren Erzähltexte, Candide ou l'optimisme, die weiteste Verbreitung. Auf die Lettres philosophiques und den Dictionnaire philosophique als genuin aufklärerische Texte wird zumeist nur in Auszügen zurückgegriffen. Auch das zumindest dem Titel nach bekannte historiografische Werk Le sià cle de Louis XIV wird nur von wenigen in Gänze rezipiert. Dass seine Zeitgenossen Voltaire vor allem als Theaterautor feiern - der Durchbruch gelingt ihm 1718 mit der Tragà die Oedipe - ist heute vielen unbekannt, zumal seine Stücke nicht mehr aufgeführt werden. Dass Voltaire sich darüber hinaus lebenslang in zahlreichen Texten theoretisch mit dieser Gattung beschäftigt, wissen nur noch Spezialisten. Dieser Umstand rührt auch daher, dass es sich nur bei einem dieser Texte, den Commentaires sur Corneille, um eine Monografie handelt, die damit bereits durch den Titel als theaterkritisches Werk auffällt. Ansonsten müssen Voltaires à uà erungen zur Tragà dientheorie mühsam zusammengetragen werden. Sie finden sich vor allem im Umfeld seiner eigenen Bühnenwerke, in Vorworten und Abhandlungen, die er seinen Stücken beifügt. Die Frage ist, ob diese wenig bekannten Texte, die zumeist von vorneherein auf geringere Breitenwirkung ausgelegt sind, das Bild Voltaires als Aufklärer und kritischer Geist bestätigen. Schlieà lich wäre es nicht erstaunlich, wenn dieser Autor auch als Bewahrer aufträte, der die Errungenschaften der vorhergehenden Epoche verteidigt: Geboren 1694, ist Voltaire knapp 21 Jahre alt, als Ludwig XIV. stirbt. Somit stehen seine Kindheit und Jugend noch unter dem Eindruck der Herrschaft des Sonnenkà nigs. Die Umgebung, in der er aufwächst, die Literatur, die er liest, und die Theaterstücke, die er sieht, tragen zumindest anfangs die Prägung der vorangehenden Epoche. Eine Beeinflussung ist daher wahrscheinlich. Tatsächlich weist sein literarisches Schaffen Voltaire als Kind der Klassik aus: Für seine ersten groà en schriftstellerischen Arbeiten wählt er Gattungen, die in Theorie und Praxis an vorderster Stelle im Gattungskanon der Klassik standen. Zeigt er sich in vielem der Klassik verhaftet - im Gegensatz zur gängigen Einstufung als Aufklärer - so gilt es im Rahmen dieser Studie, den Einfluss der klassischen Bühnentheorie auf seine tragà dientheoretische Position zu untersuchen. Dazu wird zunächst die klassische Tragà dienkonzeption dargestellt. Anschlieà end wird aufgezeigt, in welcher Form Voltaire klassisches Theater und Bühnentheorie rezipierte. Die nachfolgende Analyse beschäftigt sich mit seinen tragà dientheretischen Positionen im einzelnen und vergleicht sie mit denen der franzà sischen Klassik. Dabei wird auf Voltaires Gesamtwerk zurückgegriffen, auch unter Einbeziehung seiner Korrespondenz. Abschlieà end findet sich ein Vergleich der Tragà dientheorie Voltaires mit derjenigen bedeutender Zeitgenossen.
