Condición: Good. 1941. First Edition. 456 pages. No dust jacket. Blue cloth covered boards with gilt. Black and white photographs and colour fold-out maps. Pages remain bright and clean with minimal tanning and foxing. Binding remains firm. A previous owner's name to front free endpaper. Boards have moderate shelf wear with mild bumping and fraying to corners and crushing and fraying to spine ends. All surfaces heavily tanned. Some additional marks and staining to surfaces.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. Not dated - believed to be mid 1940s. In good red cloth boards, gilt titles to front and back strip. The covers are quite clean ans a little loose, with slight collapsed hollow, corners and spine ends bumped and frayed. Untanned end papers; purple 'Catholic Mission' stamp on front free end paper; pencil figures on rear paste down and feint stamp. Lightly tanned cut edges. The text block is in good plus condition with tightly bound pages, unmarked; slightly creased from start to page 20 and on last few pages. Frontispiece is b/w photo of Birdwood. Not annotated etc. Without jacket.

A Nice copy. - Field Marshal William Riddell Birdwood, 1st Baron Birdwood, was a British Army officer. He saw active service in the Second Boer War on the staff of Lord Kitchenermand action again in the First World War as Commander of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915, leading the landings on the peninsula and then the evacuation later in the year, before becoming commander-in-chief of the Fifth Army on the Western Front during the closing stages of the war.

Churchill and Birdwood served together in Natal as members of Lord Dundonald's Brigade at the time of the Relief of Ladysmith. He writes: "This is the story of an officer who carried a Field-Marshal's baton in his knapsack. We believe, on good authority, that every soldier does this. But this soldier, by dint of 40 years' hard work and devotion to his profession, through many campaigns and in positions of great responsibility, finally received his baton from the King". Original blue cloth. Heavy. Some pencil marginalia/undelining in the last 100 pages. Newspaper clipppings attached to front flyleaf Water stain to lower eged of the rear board. Text is similartly staind most of the way though. Fair Copy.
