The detailed story of the ways in which the people of Spain have yearned and struggled for freedom through the centuries has never been told. Here the whole drama is unfolded from the early beginnings down to our own day. About one-third of the book is written from firsthand, eyewitness experience. The author, a member of the working press now stationed in Washington, D.C., begins by presenting the situation in Spain as it is today; and then he gives the wide sweep of the background, tracing the forces of liberalism and reaction throughout the history of the country. Lawrence Fernsworth spent many years in Spain as a reporter; he was there during the period of the Civil War. He had many opportunities to study the Spanish character; and that study convinced him that something big is going to happen in Spain. Today the country is a tinderbox and a spark of any kind could set it off- just as a spark in the period of the Napoleonic invasion set off an explosion which blew the Emperor right out of the country. " Spaniards know in their hearts that another day of'battle will come," Ferns-worth says. " They know this whether they are Spaniards in exile in France or in other parts of Europe, in South American countries, in Mexico, or whether, within their own country, they are nursing their strength while awaiting their day of deliverance." Fernsworth calls on two great historians to show that freedom was an ideal in Spain first, and in the rest of Europe later. Professor Charles Mcllwain (Harvard) in the Cambridge Medieval History: " Both the ideas and the institutions of popular government in Spain go back to the commencement of the 13th century. They antedate anything of that kind in Europe." And Professor J. B. Trend (Cambridge): "It is seldom remembered that democratic government began, not in England, but in Spain." Professor Trend also showed that the principle that the King could not take action against persons or property without due process of law " had been stated in Spain before it was incorporated in the Magna Carta." Also it should be remembered that much more has happened in Spain since the Republic than the press has reported. The correspondents, as Fernsworth knows, " live under the shadow of a menacing censorship which rewards any attempt at truthful reporting with expulsion." Fernsworth was there nearly ten years for the Times of London and as a special reporter for the New York Times. In these days, Spain is getting into the headlines more and more often. What will happen when Franco goes? What about the billions of American dollars being spent in Spain? What are the Spaniards really like? Was the Republic really heading towards Communism? It is time someone told the Spanish story - all of it. 376 pages.

Here one may study feudal institutions and customs almost exactly as they existed more than 600 years ago.".
