The list of Hymenoptera in Kloet & Hincks' original edition of this work (1945) was the first supposedly complete one published since 1837. The present checklist incorporates the results of a great deal of further research. However, in only a small proportion of this research has particular attention been paid to the British fauna. Much basic taxonomy still remains to be done, especially in the Parasitica, both in terms of the British fauna and on a wider scale. We hope that this new list will serve to summarize our current knowledge, draw attention to some of the areas where work is needed, and help to stimulate interest in the British Hymenoptera. 159 pp., br. gr. 8.

Hard Cover. FIRST EDITION. Large octavo. xvi, 343 pp. Frontispiece portrait of the late Lieutenant J W Brooke with tissue-guard, plus numerous photographic illustrations throughout, some full page. Two folding maps in colour to rear. Book Condition: Very Good. Original pictorial green cloth with gilt titles to spine and black to upper board. Top edge gilt. Newspaper obituary of J W Brooke loosely inserted. Edges rubbed with small nick at head of spine; spine sunned. A slightly shaken copy with inner front hinge cracked but holding. Blindstamped "Presentation Copy" roundel to title page. Scattered light foxing; free endpapers toned. Based on the travel diary and journals of John Weston Brooke, who explored river systems in China and Tibet in the early years of the twentieth century, before his murder by Lolo tribesmen in 1908. Subject matter includes lively descriptions of the land and its people, hunting parties and natural history. Fergusson also used material by C H Mears who accompanied Brooke on his second expedition, but was unable to write an account himself owing to his commitment to Scott's journey to the Antarctic; he passed the torch on to his relative and fellow traveller Fergusson.

Condición: Sehr gut. Original decorated cloth, xvi + 343 pages, frontispiece with tissue guard, numerous illustrations, 2 folding colour maps, armorial bookplate inside front cover, light scratch on the front cover, small tear in the fold of one of the maps (without loss), very good condition. Very important account of Eastern Tibet - Brooke was murdered there in 1908 searching for the sources of Brahmaputra/Tsangpo on his second expedition whose geography he researched during both of this expeditions. He started both journeys, which are recounted in this book, from Western China, as the British authorities denied him travelling through Assam. Brooke published during his lifetime only a brief account of his first journey, published privately ("Through China to Tibet in 1906"), which is unobtainable (the only copy we have seen made in the Brooke Hitching sale more than GBP 5,000; the second copy is in a US public library). During his first journey from August 1906 to October 1907 Brooke met the Dalai Lama at Sining. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 1550.

Half Morocco. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. 343 pp. 76 photographs. In the words of W. N. Fergusson, this book is mainly an account of two journeys taken through China and Tibet by the late Lieutenant Brooke. Mr. Brooke started on his first journey from Shanghai on August 1, 1906, and after crossing Tibet, returned to Shanghai in October 1907. He left Shanghai on his second journey in December, 1907, and travelled in Western Sechuan and Eastern Tibet until December 24, 1908, when he was murdered in the Independent Lolo Land. On the second of these two expeditions, Lt Brooke was accompanied by Mr C. H. Meares; and when that journey came to its untimely end, Mr Meares returned to England and wrote some articles on the country they had been travelling through. These generated considerable interest and Mr Meares was urged to make a more permanent record of the journey, but as he was already enlisted by Captain Scott for the Antarctic Expedition, the task fell to Fergusson. He was entrusted with Brooke's diary and photographs taken by him on his journeys and Fergusson here unites his own knowledge of the remote Tibetan and western and southern Se-chuan [sic] (Lololand) region, never previously visited by white people, with that of Mr Meares and Lt Brooke. Recent green half morocco with smart gilt-stamped, banded spine and green cloth boards. First few endpapers are new. Original free endpaper before half title page bears a signed dedication from, perhaps, Mr Brooke's mother to 'Ada McLeod with love from Mrs. Brooke 1911'. Some waterstaining to front endpapers, frontis. and title and some damp marking to bottom corner of pages scattered through the book, but very little damage to the two fold-out maps of western and southern Sechuan Large 8vo.

Brooke on his 1906-07 and 1907-08 expeditions to determine the source and course of the Tsangpo River. After being refused permission by the British to enter Tibet from Assam he took the known route from Koko Nor over the Tang La to Tibet in 1906, and was turned back. On his second attempt he travelled from Shanghai towards Tibet, much of the time in company with Fergusson, but was killed by Lolo tribesmen of southern Szechwan near the Burmese border. Yakushi F29.
