Condición: Fair. 1879. None Stated. 227 pages. No dust jacket. Blue cloth with gilt lettering. Pages are mildly foxed & tanned throughout. Severe cracking to hinges and gutters causing boards and binding to be loose. However, boards & pages throughout remain attached. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Visible tanning & crushing to spine. Minor splits causing fraying to cloth at spine ends. Gilt lettering remains bright and clear.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. First Thus. 7" tall blue and white hardback. Gold print and decorations on boards. Boards are quite dirty. Moisture staining on back board (does not appear to affect the interior of the book). Bumping along edges and corners of boards. Spine faded. Boards in Fair condition (probably Good given the age of the book). Name on ffep with Christmas 1898. Pages are tight. I did see a very few pages with a bit of underlining in light pencil. Vast majority of pages are clean/unmarked. 366 pages. Page pasted to back inside cover with message to PO. Only print info stated is "1895" on bottom of title page and Copyright 1895 on copyright page, so I am assuming this is a First Edition. Spine and front cover have "Canon Farrer Year Book" as title. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Tenth edition, small 8vo, 21 preliminary pages, 221 pages, ( i page publisher's advertisement), very good condition in publisher's blind decorated cloth, gilt titled on spine, corners of boards and top and bottom of spine bumped, some stains on the boards, text in fine, clean condition. The presence of the stamp "specimen" on the front board suggests that the book may have been a publisher's sample.

A few small marks and smduges to boards and water-stain lower left front corner and lower right corner at rear. (Photos on request). Previous owner's library label to front paste-down. Marbled endpapers and full marble edging. Darkened top edge. Greyed foredge. Prelims are yellowed with a few smudges to edges. Main contents are otherwise very good and unmarked. Nice well-bound copy.

Condición: VG. First Edition. In very good condition, cloth bright, crisp inside, possibly unused. Small 8vo., original green cloth, gilt lettered spine, boards ruled in blind. 'Kings College London' in gilt to spine tail. Other library marks negligible. 3 folding philological maps, table, index. Later republished with 'Chapters on Language' as 'Language and Languages'. Used; Very Good The title page is blind-stamped "Bulstrode, Gerrards Cross, Bucks". It also appears to have been, at a later date, part of the Walford collection at Kings College, London. Farrar was a classics scholar and a comparative philologist, who applied Charles Darwin's ideas of branching descent to the relationships between languages, engaging in a protracted debate with the anti-Darwinian linguist Max Müller.

Cloth. Condición: Good. None Ilustrador. A fascinating book on linguistics with colour fold out maps and two colour tables on language to the rear. Frederic William Farrar was a cleric of the Church of England who became successively a canon of Westminster and rector of St Margaret's, Westminster, archdeacon of Westminster Abbey and the Dean of Canterbury. He was an eloquent preacher and a voluminous author. With previous owner's named bookplate to front pastedown 'William Young Macqueen'. In a decorative cloth binding. Externally, sound but slightly bumped. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with scattered foxing, more pronounced to endpapers and the odd handling mark. Good. book.
