From the rear cover: "Although he belonged to an American generation of writers deeply influenced by the high modernist revolt 'against nature' and against the self-imposed limits of realism to a palpable world, William Faulkner reveals throughout his works an abiding sensitivity to the natural world. He writes of the big woods, of animals, and of the human body as a 'ground of being' that art and culture can neither transcend nor completely control. The eleven essays that make up this volume, including a paper written by the acclaimed novelist William Kennedy, explore the place of 'the unbuilt world' in Faulkner's fiction. They give particular attention to the social, mythic, and economic significance of nature, to the complexity of racial identity, and to the inevitable clash of gender and sexuality. These essays were presented in 1996 as papers at the Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference, held annually at the University of Mississippi.". First Printing of the First Edition. Soft Cover. Soft cover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. 30 pp. with B/W illustrations and bibliography. Usual ex-library markings with light edgewear incluing 1.5 diagonal shallow crease at lower corner of front and back covers. Catalogue of an exhibition organized by the graduate students in the Museum Practice Program at the University of Michigan Museum of Art from March 20 to April 26, 1982. ?In 1937 Margaret Watson Parker's gift became the most important bequest of art objects to come into the University of Michigan's possession. Between 1937 and 1955, Mrs Parker's collection of 679 objects was gradually transferred to the University of Michigan from her Grosse Pointe home. Although the University had been receiving and collecting art objects since 1859, it was not until 1946 that the Museum of Art was formally recognized as a distinct administrative unit. Mrs. Parker?s substantial contribution played a key role in this formative stage of the museum's development and continues to be recognized today as a strength of the permanent collection.? Under the influence of Charles Freer, Parker collected the work of James McNeill Whistler, 30 of whose etchings were included in this exhibition, along with examples of Parker's Japanese woodblock prints and Pewabic pottery.
