Pencil underlines in Introduction, otherwise textually unmarked; clean and tight. Author was officer in the 7th Iowa Cavalry during the Civil War; campaigns against the Indians. Ware's unit fought its own war against the Sioux and Cheyenne in the Dakotas, Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska. The 7th Iowa patrolled and fought to keep the overland trail open from Fort Kearney, Nebraska, to Fort Laramie, Wyoming. This book is an eyewitness account based on author's daily journal and his letters.
